Don Nelson’s Celebration of Life in Dallas included a moment that was unmistakably Nellie.
During Thursday’s ceremony honoring the Hall of Fame coach, Nelson’s son Donnie stepped forward with a basketball and punted it into the crowd, recreating one of his father’s most memorable sideline antics. Waiting on the other end was Steve Nash, who caught the ball.

The gesture referenced a moment from Nelson’s time coaching the Dallas Mavericks during the 2002-03 season, when he famously kicked a basketball into the stands. Rather than simply describing the story during the memorial, Donnie Nelson turned it into a live tribute; with one of the most important players from his father’s Dallas years completing the play.
Nash’s involvement made the moment particularly fitting. Nelson helped reshape the Mavericks around Nash, Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley after taking over in Dallas in the late 1990s. Under Nelson, the franchise returned to the playoffs in 2001 after an 11-year absence and developed into one of the Western Conference’s strongest teams, eventually reaching the conference finals in 2003.
Nash, meanwhile, developed from a young guard searching for consistency into an All-Star during those years. The partnership between Nelson, Nash and Nowitzki became one of the defining chapters of the coach’s career and helped establish the foundation for Dallas’ long run of success.
That history gave Thursday’s catch a deeper meaning.
Nelson, who died Sunday at 86, was never known for doing things conventionally. His coaching career was built around experimentation, offensive creativity and an instinct to challenge traditional basketball thinking. Over 31 seasons as an NBA head coach, he won 1,335 regular-season games, earned three Coach of the Year awards and became one of the sport’s most influential innovators. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.
His personality was just as memorable as his basketball ideas.
So when Donnie Nelson looked for a way to honor his father, a formal gesture alone would not have felt quite right.
Instead, he punted a basketball.
And Steve Nash caught it.
For a celebration centered on one of the NBA’s great unconventional minds, it was a wonderfully unconventional goodbye.
