An American YouTuber is 3D printing an entire Part 103 airplane and building it inside his apartment to prove the impossible is possible.
YouTuber Error by Human has been building the airplane in his apartment for a while after spending over five months designing it.
The YouTuber is doing this on quite a tight budget. That has led to a bit of innovation as the build has progressed.
His latest video gives us a rundown of the project and how it’s been going so far.
Why is the American man building the Part 103 airplane?
Simply put, the YouTuber wants to prove that the impossible can be done.
Building any aircraft is a challenge for someone who isn’t an aircraft manufacturer.
But to create one out of 3D-printed parts and put it together for flight? That is a whole new level of commitment.
The start of the video shows Evan, the man behind the channel, showing that the fuselage build has been completed.
“After designing the fuselage of the plane, I decided to print out all the pieces so that I can connect them all at once,” said the YouTuber.
We can see the YouTuber sanding the edges down to allow the parts to fit as tightly as possible.
“Ideally, I want to work in sections,” said Evan, as he relayed how he was going to build the Part 103 airplane.
Building in sections makes construction much easier
“I’m working on the back, the center, and the front,” said the YouTuber.
“I feel like if I work just on the front, then work my way back, there could be small tolerances that create big tolerances,” he added.
Working across these free sections meant the YouTuber would be confident of the tolerances when it came to assembly.
As the airplane began to take shape, working on it became more awkward.
That meant the workspace needed reorganizing.
Evan also revealed that he planned to reinforce the structure of the airplane with carbon fiber skins that surrounded foam cores.
As there is no clear design for Evan’s particular custom airplane, he has to almost make it up as he goes along.
The DIY airplane began to take shape
Towards the end of the video, we can see that the airplane is beginning to take shape.
Evan installed the seat into the cockpit, and the nose of the plane had started to come together.
It was clear, however, that there was still plenty of work for the YouTuber to do.
So, what were the next steps for the airplane?
“It’s only going to get more insane from here,” said Evan towards the end of the video.
The plane is already around 13ft tall and is likely to exceed 16ft when it is all finished.
Given the experimental nature of this build, Evan is keen to take this project step by step, and nice and slow.
You really can’t help but be impressed by a man building an airplane in his own apartment.
