Indonesian action maestro Timo Tjahjanto has provided a promising update on his brutally acclaimed Netflix equivalent of John Wick. The filmmaker confirmed he is currently writing a sequel and also gave a personal insight into the emotional core of his hyper-violent assassin saga.

While Netflix has yet to issue a formal greenlight, Tjahjanto revealed via X (formerly Twitter) that he is actively developing The Shadow Strays 2’s screenplay. “I am slowly writing on the sequel, The Shadow Strays is possibly my most personal movie yet. I still have personal stories to tell in the sequel.” The director, known for pushing the boundaries of physical combat in films like The Night Comes for Us, described the 2024 release’s emotional strand.
The John Wick-like movie first introduced audiences to Codename 13 (Aurora Ribero), a teenage operative for a clandestine organization known as the Shadows. After a mission goes sideways, she crosses paths with Monji, a boy whose mother was murdered by a crime syndicate.
The narrative prompted many viewers to question why a trained killer would risk her life for a stranger. Tjahjanto addressed this, stating, “People asked why she fought tooth n nail to save a boy she barely know, I asked them back ; if you tap into your humanity & see the strength within yourself, wouldn’t you try to do the same , kindred bond knows no logic, its just is.”
This thematic focus on “kindred bond” suggests The Shadow Strays 2 will delve deeper into the psychology of its protagonist rather than relying solely on spectacle. However, Timo Tjahjanto assured fans that the action will not take a backseat. In a separate post, he promised the follow-up “will deliver the craziest Ninja combat ever done by women,” raising the bar significantly from the already intense original.
Currently, Tjahjanto is expanding his footprint in the West, recently directing Nobody 2 and preparing to helm The Beekeeper 2 starring Jason Statham.
