Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion are closing in on a deal for midfielder Carlos Baleba.
United have made an offer of around £60million (€70m, $81m) plus £5m in add-ons which is felt to be below what Brighton would be seeking to sell.
Amicable talks continue with all parties working towards finding an agreement for the Cameroon international to move to Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old is currently working his way back to fitness after an ankle ligament injury but the issue is not considered serious or expected to keep him out long-term.
Midfield has been an area of significant focus for United in the transfer market this summer.
Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have already arrived from Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively while a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson was also agreed before the club backed out over injury concerns surrounding the Brazil international’s knee.
They were also keen onElliot Anderson before the England international opted to move to rivals Manchester City instead.
Should a move for Baleba progress he would join Tielemans, Santos, Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes as first-team options for head coach Michael Carrick.
Manuel Ugarte is currently sidelined with the knee injury he suffered during the World Cup with Uruguay while Mason Mount has also missed the final two games of pre-season.
Baleba joined Brighton from Lille in the summer of 2023 and has played 112 times for the south-coast club. Last season he made 35 appearances in total for the club, missing several due to his participation at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Why United have wanted Baleba
Analysis by Manchester United correspondent Laurie Whitwell
After United made significant work to explore a transfer for Baleba last summer, the midfielder had a difficult campaign with Brighton. But The Athletic reported in April how signing him was still highly plausible due to his impressive displays in his first two seasons in the Premier League and his underlying data.
United also watched him play for Cameroon during the Africa Cup of Nations, alongside Bryan Mbeumo, where Baleba was viewed as having a positive tournament across five matches. United rate his metrics as a good fit for the squad in terms of ground coverage, possession-winning and passing.
Given his left-footedness, Baleba could also potentially provide cover at left-back.
Last season Baleba was substituted off in 15 Premier League games, including at half-time on four occasions. It seems undeniable that United’s pursuit last summer turned his head, and his form at Brighton was partially affected. He also worked through some injury niggles. When appearing for Cameroon, he regained his confidence. Brighton staff supported him throughout.
Baleba completed 90 minutes only three times, but one of those was in the 3-0 win over Chelsea, when he played well, winning the ball in the penalty box from Robert Sanchez to set up Jack Hinshelwood for a big chance. He started the next three matches and came off the bench against United on the final day.
Last summer, when Baleba’s stock was high after two excellent seasons, United would have gone to £75m but Brighton wanted more than £100m. Now, United are set to strike a deal for significantly below that.
