Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey reunite after True Detective
Woody Harrelson confirmed his upcoming Apple TV series Brothers with Matthew McConaughey during a career talk at the Sarajevo Film Festival, as reported by Variety.
The show reunites the two actors after their collaboration on True Detective. Created by The Office producer Lee Eisenberg, the series follows fictionalized versions of both actors. Their friendship faces a challenge when they discover a decades-old secret about possibly being real brothers.
The premise draws from actual events that Harrelson shared publicly in recent years. The actor revealed that his father met McConaughey’s mother around the time she conceived the Dallas Buyers Club star. “I started ruminating on this and thought it would make a pretty cool show,” Harrelson said about developing the concept. He also told the audience not to expect a gritty drama. “If you like True Detective and you want more of that, it’s not this,” he added. Harrelson compared the tone to Curb Your Enthusiasm instead.
Beyond Brothers, the actor also mentioned Jason Bateman’s The Cackling of the Dodos. That project reunites him with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri star Sam Rockwell. Harrelson recalled Bateman joking that he could smell his “SAG card burning” because he went “so over the top” during a key scene.
Harrelson attended the Bosnian festival as the recipient of an honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award. He also participated in a special screening of Michael Winterbottom’s Welcome to Sarajevo. The 1997 film follows journalists covering the Bosnian war. Harrelson reflected on revisiting the city nearly three decades later. “It’s alive and bustling,” he said. “It’s incredible the metamorphosis from back then.” He also praised Jesse Eisenberg’s upcoming film The Debut, calling it “phenomenal.”
