Boston Celtics owner Bill Chisholm has made it clear that trading Jaylen Brown was anything but an emotionless business decision.
Speaking about the blockbuster move, Chisholm acknowledged the unusual tension between his responsibilities as an owner and the perspective he still carries as a longtime Celtics fan. While he ultimately backed president of basketball operations Brad Stevens and Boston’s front office, Chisholm admitted he needed convincing before becoming comfortable with moving a player who had been such a significant part of the franchise.
“I truly believe we have the best front office in the NBA, and I think it’s a source of advantage for us every day,” Chisholm said. “So I definitely have a level of trust in Brad and his team. But man, as a fan, that was tough.”
For Chisholm, there was also an awareness of how strongly the trade would resonate outside the organization. Brown was not simply another asset on Boston’s roster, and Chisholm acknowledged worrying about how Celtics supporters would react to seeing him moved.
“You have to be a sociopath if you don’t worry a little bit about what other fans are going to think,” Chisholm said.
His comments offer a revealing glimpse into the relationship between ownership and basketball operations in Boston. Chisholm may ultimately have authority at the highest organizational level, but his remarks suggest he does not intend to operate as an owner who substitutes his personal basketball preferences for the evaluations of the front office.
Instead, the Brown decision became an early and significant example of that philosophy. Chisholm trusted Stevens and his staff precisely because they were willing to make a move that was uncomfortable emotionally but one they believed was right from a basketball perspective.
“We’ve got the best brains in basketball,” Chisholm said, “and this was something they had conviction around.”
For Celtics fans, that conviction will inevitably be judged by what happens next. Moving a player of Brown’s stature creates enormous expectations for whatever follows. Chisholm’s comments make one thing clear, however: Boston did not make the decision casually.
