Mariah Carey is marking 25 years of Glitter with an expanded reissue of her once-maligned 2001 album, due October 30th via Def Jam and UMe. To mark the occasion, she has unveiled a newly reimagined version of “Didn’t Mean to Turn You On” featuring British-Canadian singer-songwriter Rochelle Jordan. Stream it below.
Produced by KLSH, the new rendition arrives ahead of an expanded digital deluxe edition of Glitter featuring 15 additional tracks. The bonus material will include rare and previously unreleased recordings pulled from Carey’s personal vault, though the complete tracklist has yet to be revealed.
The anniversary celebration will also bring Glitter back to vinyl for the first time since its original release. The standard two-LP edition comes pressed on purple vinyl, while the deluxe version arrives on pink vinyl with three bonus tracks: “Out Here on My Own,” “Never Too Far/Hero (Medley),” and the original version of “Loverboy,” which samples Yellow Magic Orchestra’s “Firecracker.” A limited number of copies with signed lithographs and foil numbering will also be available. “If someone had told me back in 2001 that I’d one day be unironically celebrating Glitter‘s 25th anniversary, I never would have believed them,” Carey said in a statement. “I made this album with so much love and care, so it was devastating to watch it become a punchline. I’m endlessly grateful to my fans who kept championing it all these years, and I hope even more people can finally hear it for what it is.”
Released in September 2001 as both Carey’s eighth studio album and the soundtrack to the film of the same name, Glitter drew from the plot’s 1983 setting through a mix of dance-pop, funk, R&B, and hip-hop. The project featured Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis as well as DJ Clue behind the boards, with guests including Ludacris, Da Brat, Busta Rhymes, Fabolous, Ja Rule, and Eric Benét.
The album’s reputation has undergone a dramatic reversal in the decades since. That reevaluation reached new heights in 2018 with the fan-led #JusticeForGlitter campaign, which helped propel the album to No. 1 on the iTunes albums chart more than 17 years after its release.
