Live Music Editor

The term “sophomore slump” was originally coined as campus language for the dip in motivation, direction, or performance some students experience in their second year of high school or college. In music, it’s less a descriptor of depression and more a cautionary tale. The pressure to replicate the success of a debut album can be debilitating; some acts buckle, returning with an album that pales in comparison.
Sophomore slumps are brutal realities for many musical acts, but they’re also a bummer for the audience; many of us have had the experience of loving a new artist’s debut, feeling giddy at the announce of a second album, and eagerly sitting to give it a spin, only to find that none of the songs are really that good. In some cases, it was worse — these songs were bad, risks that were not paying off.
Still, even with a sophomore dud, not all flops lead to the same outcome of eternal damnation. Plenty of acts survive the slump and go on to make their best work — bands like U2, KISS, and Bon Jovi all powered through the criticism and continued to provide ample reasons to be a fan. Some acts, though — like The Stone Roses, B.o.B., and Jet — never really graduated onto bigger and better things.

There are also sophomore records that were panned or divisive with fans upon release, but have since been reappraised and have become beloved or respected; that includes MGMT’sCongratulations, which was once derided but is now celebrated, as well as Weezer’sPinkerton, which at first received mixed reviews but has since been regarded as a classic, and even landed on our list of the 100 Best Sophomore Albums of All Time. We’ve opted to not include these albums for this list, instead attempting to round up the sophomore records that didn’t hold up then and still don’t hold up now.
