Prime Video has found its next Kratos, and the replacement has already sparked plenty of excitement among fans. A well-known actor will take over the iconic warrior after Ryan Hurst exited the God of War show because of a serious on-set injury.
Dave Bautista is officially the new Kratos in God of War
Prime Video has found its new Kratos in Dave Bautista after Ryan Hurst exited the live-action God of War series. Hurst had landed the role in January 2026, but a torn bicep suffered during production led to major surgery and ultimately forced him out. With the show moving ahead, Prime Video reportedly saw Bautista as the best man to take over the role (via ScreenRant).
The part also gives Bautista plenty of room to flex more than just his muscles. The series is based on the 2018 game, following Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey across the Norse realms. They set out to fulfill Faye’s final wish by scattering her ashes from the highest peak in the realms. Beneath all the monsters and mayhem, it’s really a story about a father and son trying to find their way through grief.
Prime Video is going all-in on God of War, with two seasons already ordered and plans to film them consecutively. Cameras started rolling in Vancouver in February, but Bautista’s arrival creates a major production headache.
Scenes previously shot with Hurst will have to be filmed again. Work could restart within a month, though the shake-up might push the series beyond its planned 2027 debut. For now, Prime Video has yet to lock in a premiere date.
Bautista will also step into a packed cast featuring Callum Vinson as Atreus, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Louis Cunningham as Modi, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, and Island Austin as Thrud.
