Gilbert Arenas is not buying the argument that Philadelphia’s collection of stars will create an offensive problem simply because there is only one basketball.

With the 76ers bringing together Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and LeBron James, questions about touches, shot distribution and offensive hierarchy have naturally followed. Arenas believes the solution is far less complicated than the discussion surrounding it.

“What the f***ing problem is? Pass the ball,” Arenas said while addressing concerns about whether Philadelphia has enough possessions to satisfy everyone.

His larger point was that elite teams have always required accomplished scorers to adjust their responsibilities. Arenas specifically pointed toward Brown’s championship experience in Boston as evidence that an established star can remain highly effective without controlling every possession.

Brown spent years alongside Jayson Tatum and became an increasingly devastating scorer attacking defenses after the initial action had already shifted their positioning. During Boston’s 2024 championship run, he won Eastern Conference Finals MVP and then NBA Finals MVP, averaging 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.0 assists in the Finals against Dallas.

Arenas’ description of Brown simply waiting in the corner should not be taken literally as a complete representation of his role on those Celtics teams. Brown handled the ball extensively, initiated offense and attacked in isolation. The broader basketball argument, however, is clear: Brown has already demonstrated that he can thrive alongside another high-usage superstar while exploiting advantages created elsewhere on the floor.

That experience could become particularly valuable in Philadelphia.

Brown was acquired from Boston in July in exchange for Paul George and draft compensation, joining an already talented core featuring Embiid and Maxey. Philadelphia subsequently added James, creating one of the league’s most accomplished collections of offensive talent.

Brown himself has already acknowledged that the arrangement will demand sacrifice, saying after arriving in Philadelphia that winning will require players to prioritize team success over individual numbers.

For Arenas, the hierarchy also begins with Embiid. Despite the former MVP’s injury history, Arenas still views him as Philadelphia’s primary superstar and believes the offense should continue flowing through him when he is available.

That does not mean Maxey, Brown or James suddenly become spectators. It means Philadelphia will have to turn an abundance of creators into an advantage rather than treating touches as something that must be divided equally.

The Sixers’ challenge therefore may not be finding enough basketballs. It will be convincing four elite offensive players that the same basketball does not always have to belong to them.
