A beloved John Cusack romantic comedy is getting a new version from Michael Showalter. Serendipity is being reimagined for Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax, and its original writer are returning.
As reported by Deadline, Marc Klein will once again pen the screenplay after working on the 2001 film. Casting is now underway for the new project, which will offer a fresh take on the familiar concept.
Peter Chelsom directed the original film, which starred Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. The story was about two strangers who meet in New York on Christmas night and quickly develop feelings for each other. Both are engaged to other people, but their connection leaves them wondering about a possible future. They part ways and search for each other seven years later.
What Michael Showalter has planned for the new Serendipity
As a director, Showalter is approaching the project as something different from a standard remake. He says the film will feature new characters, a new story, and fresh ideas about relationships.
He said, “I am so honored and excited to get to live inside this iconic funny, romantic and intelligent world that Marc Klein has created. This new Serendipity is not a remake or even a reboot. I’d say it’s more of a rebuttal. Same title. New characters. New story and new ideas about love and relationships.”
Showalter will produce alongside Jordana Mollick for Semi-Formal Productions. Simon Fields, who produced the original movie, is also attached as a producer. Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy, and Thom Zadra will executive produce for Miramax. Klein will join them as an executive producer on the project.
Showalter has previously worked on The Big Sick, The Lovebirds, Hello, My Name Is Doris, and Spoiler Alert. More recently, he directed The Idea of You, starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine. The film became Prime Video’s biggest rom-com debut at the time of its release.
Showalter has also reunited with Amazon MGM for Verity. The Colleen Hoover adaptation stars Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett.
Meanwhile, the upcoming reimagined version of Serendipity does not have a release date yet. Amazon MGM and Miramax are currently moving forward with casting.
