Despite warnings not to go ahead with it, this man decided to take a flight inside one of the last remaining Zeppelins.
For most of us, Zeppelins are only something you’d see in a film or on the page of a history book.
So it’s exceptionally rare to have the opportunity to ride inside of one.
For YouTuber Luke O’Sullivan, this blast from the past didn’t go quite how he’d expected.
We often think of Zeppelins as being a thing of the past
Unfortunately, when we think of Zeppelins, our collective memory tends to drift to the infamous Hindenburg Disaster in 1937.
This disaster, in which a fire killed 35 passengers, was part of the downfall of airship travel.
The fact that rapid adoption of airplanes followed soon after proved to be the kiss of death.
But still, Zeppelins have continued to exist in the present day in one form or another.

The Goodyear Blimp has made its way into headlines one way or another, whether that’s through landing in Los Angeles or a YouTuber filming its interior.
And while it’s a mode of transport very much associated with a bygone era, there’s still developments in the field – as demonstrated by this hybrid airship.
YouTuber Luke O’Sullivan had the opportunity to take a flight on board a Zeppelin, and it would surprise him in more ways than one.
What this YouTuber thought about his trip on a Zeppelin
In Friedrichshafen, Germany, O’Sullivan had the opportunity to fly in an airship.
“We used to have these massive flying airships with restaurants and cabins and lounges doing transatlantic flights every other week,” he said.

“This was the Concorde of its time.”
With only five operational Zeppelins left in the world, being a passenger on one was a golden opportunity he couldn’t afford to pass up.
Onboard, he met Katherine Board – the world’s first female Zeppelin pilot – who took him on a personal walkthrough of the airship’s structure and controls.
“This particular airship is like a cross between a helicopter and a ship really,” Board said.

“For takeoff and landing, it’s a little bit more like a helicopter… In flight, it floats on the air like a ship on the water. The only difference is you can’t see the waves.”
This was an assessment that O’Sullivan found imself in agreement with.
“You can see how people used to do this as like a pleasure cruise because it feels kind of like you’re on a boat,” he said.
“The movements are soft. It’s not going too fast, or at least it doesn’t feel like it is, and the views are insane.”

This element of the flying experience is what surprised him most.
“This thing was really fast taking off. But what was really weird was how smooth it was,” he recalled.
“It didn’t have massive G-forces like on a plane, and it wasn’t choppy like a helicopter. It was actually like being on a ship on a very calm day.”
What surprised the YouTuber the most about the Zeppelin trip
“It’s hard to pick one thing [that surprised me most] so here’s three,” O’Sullivan told Supercar Blondie.
“First up, it was smoother than anything I’ve travelled in before. It was more comparable a boat on a calm day than other aircraft.
“Second, this thing was luxury. I was expecting a mad machine retrofitted for guests, but it felt equivalent to a nice commercial jet. It even had a proper bathroom — complete with a window.
“And finally, you could open the windows and stick your head out. On top of that, the wind was less strong than sticking your head out of a car window, which I guess makes sense, but that for sure came as a surprise.”
Does he think Zeppelins are due a comeback?
“Absolutely. They make absolutely zero sense from a commercial travel perspective, but as a sightseeing experience, I think we should have a lot more of them around the world,” he said.
“A few weeks after I filmed the video, the Goodyear Blimp (which is actually a Zeppelin airship, not a blimp) flew over London.
“It was amazing to see everyone’s reaction and I couldn’t help but think that, if it were to stay all summer long, it’d make for a great day out for both tourists and Londoners. If you find yourself near Friedrichshafen any time soon, please fly on a Zeppelin. You won’t regret it!”
While we wouldn’t bet on Zeppelins seeing a major comeback, it’d be a shame if they disappeared entirely, wouldn’t it?
