Militaries around the world rely heavily on the use of various electronics, satellites, and Global Positioning System (GPS) devices. These make finding oneself in the world, as well as locating others, far easier than in the past, but it’s fair to say that GPS dependence can be a hindrance. Should the technology fail, a servicemember has to pull out their trusty map, compass, protractor, and pencil to work out their position. Fortunately, all members of the U.S. military are trained to do so, but that’s not necessarily true of other nations’ fighting forces.

Positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) are vitally important in accurately finding one’s precise location, moving from one’s current location to a desired position elsewhere, and maintaining accurate and precise time from anywhere in the world. Essentially, PNT is required for GPS to function accurately, and a new system recently tested by the U.S. Army seeks to interrupt enemy PNT, potentially turning it into a weakness. The system is named the “Hammer of the Gods,” and it underwent a field test in coordination with the Army, Navy, and Space Forcein July 2026.

During the testing, Hammer of the Gods saw its first use in a maritime environment, and the emitter functioned as designed. Because PNT is such a vital component of modern weapon systems, disrupting it causes a significant reduction in precision targeting, reducing a system’s overall effectiveness in the battlespace. The experiment proved that the Hammer of the Gods can work in real-world maritime environments; prior testing for ground-based operation has also succeeded over the previous two years.

Disrupting PTN gives a significant advantage

This type of technology would be advantageous in multiple conflicts, as disrupting GPS could reduce the efficacy of drones. Modern warfare has evolved to include a great many drones of various types, and a lot of them rely on GPS to operate. Removing their ability to navigate could reduce their lethality to zero. That alone would make the Hammer of the Gods an ideal tool to take into combat operations, but PNT disruption offers much more than potential counter-drone capabilities.

According to Lt. Col. Darrin Hall, the chief of modeling, simulation, and integration for U.S. Space Forces Pacific, “PNT is the foundation of modern military operations. Counter-PNT effects enhance lethality by impacting the backbone for pinpoint targeting via long-range artillery, guided missiles and cruise munitions. Without PNT data, modern weapon precision drops sharply, resulting in delayed missions, missed objectives or severe collateral damage.”

PNT is also a vital component of artillery and ballistic missile targeting. Reducing that threat is also a vital aspect of the Hammer of the Gods’ potential, so it’s clear why the U.S. military is working jointly to develop and test the new system. While the details of the system’s full capabilities remain out of the public’s hands as of writing, future development could set up the Hammer of the Gods to become one of the most important items in any ground or naval conflict, so the system’s potential cannot truly be overstated.
