Usually, when a player has an impressive rookie year, he gets a larger role in the offense for his sophomore season. Not VJ Edgecombe. The 76ers rookie averaged 16 points a game and was third in Rookie of the Year voting, but he’s going to see his role get squeezed this season with the additions of Jaylen Brown and LeBron James.
Edgecombe is good with that, he told Chris Hine of The Philadelphia Inquirer (hat tip Hoops Rumors) over the weekend at his youth basketball camp.
“I just want to win. I’m going to still be aggressive, still be myself. If that comes with less shots or more shots, who knows. I don’t know how the course of the game is going to go. I’m just excited to play alongside my teammates. I think we have a chance to do something really special…
“I’m totally excited. It’s such a blessing. I’m going into year two playing alongside my favorite player ever (LeBron)… That’s the main thing for me, just learning, getting to know them. They’re all great persons. Down to earth, not acting super big-time like they are, but they’re really a bunch of humble men. I’m just glad to be around them.”
It’s going to take Nick Nurse and his staff the first month of the season, give or take, to find the rotation and rhythm he likes with this team, which will be complicated by Joel Embiid’s availability on any given night. Don’t be surprised if this feels like LeBron joining the Heat, who started 9-8 his first season as everyone adjusted to their new roles. That Heat team went on to win 58 games and reach the NBA Finals, and Philly would take that outcome.
Edgecombe is going to be a big part of figuring all that out, and he might get staggered to play more with a second unit where he can get more touches and more freedom in the offense.
While his stats might take a hit, what matters is that Edgecombe’s game and efficiency keep improving. What he wants is a chance to win and win big, and Philadelphia has that.
