Leeds United remain interested in signing Mykhailo Mudryk on loan from Chelsea. News of talks between the two clubs, and a rejected offer from the West Yorkshire side, broke last week.
On Monday, some outlets reported Leeds had been discounted from the possibilities Chelsea had drawn up for Mudryk. Sources at Elland Road, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, feel the Ukrainian is keen on a Leeds move, but confidence in Chelsea’s desire to negotiate with them is waning.
Here, The Athletic runs through the key questions hanging over any deal, with Leeds correspondent Beren Cross and Chelsea correspondent Liam Twomey.
Why are Leeds interested in him?
This is a 25-year-old attacker who Chelsea were willing to commit £62million, rising to £89m, to in January 2023. Three years on, inflation has only taken transfer fees in one direction, so Leeds see this as a big opportunity to land someone ordinarily far beyond their financial grasp.
United see Mudryk’s high ceiling, with an excellent technical level and explosive physical presence, which they hope to revitalise at Elland Road. The club, as it has done with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Lukas Nmecha, Manor Solomon and Junior Firpo in recent years, backs its medical department to get players fit and firing.
There would be a financial cost to meeting at least a percentage of Mudryk’s wages, but Leeds see limited risk in acquiring a player like this on loan without any permanent strings attached. He is a right-footed attacker who plays off the left flank, which is a profile they have targeted this summer.

They’ve had an approach rejected. Are they still pushing for him?
Yes, but as of Monday afternoon, confidence was beginning to wane. Talks with Chelsea have continued into this week, but United have made it clear they will not be held to ransom on this deal.
Leeds sources sense Mudryk is very keen on coming to West Yorkshire, but Chelsea are keener to send him to Strasbourg, their sister outfit in France. United are content to walk away from the deal if negotiations go beyond their limits.
They are aware Chelsea expected significant game time for Mudryk, wherever he goes. Club sources say manager Daniel Farke has always been very honest with players on their game time expectations, and he has never promised anyone starts without them earning it first.
What is Chelsea’s outlook?
Chelsea sources insist that Leeds have been ruled out as an option for Mudryk after their loan offer for the Ukrainian was rejected. Other clubs in the Premier League and in Europe have expressed interest in signing him permanently or on loan.
As far as a loan is concerned, Chelsea’s primary aim is the same as that of Mudryk: to find the right place for him to play regular high-level football after almost two years away from the game. The key question for both parties is which club ticks the boxes that matter most.
Strasbourg would present the advantage of keeping Mudryk within the BlueCo network, which may provide greater reassurance that he would be picked regularly and platformed in the best way to enable him to showcase his qualities and rebuild his career.

One consideration here is that Chelsea can only loan three players to Strasbourg in a single season, and Genesis Antwi and Filip Jorgensen have already joined the Ligue 1 club for the 2026-27 campaign. That leaves one remaining spot, but it could also go to Dario Essugo.
Staying in the Premier League might end up being preferable for everyone involved, but the terms of any agreement (such as the percentage of salary covered and loan fee) still need to make business sense for Chelsea.

Who actually runs Chelsea?
And does the player want the move?
Mudryk’s preference is to stay in the Premier League, and he is prioritising that over interest from several other clubs around Europe this summer.
Leeds in particular are regarded by the player’s camp as a good fit. There is a high degree of confidence that they will not be dragged into a relegation battle this season, and their high-octane transitional style would give Mudryk plenty of opportunities to make the most of his blistering speed and direct running.
Going to Strasbourg is understood not to appeal to Mudryk.

How ready is he for Premier League football?
This is hard to say definitively. Watching him train alone at Uxbridge FC’s ground in April, it was clear that he has kept himself in fantastic physical shape and has lost none of his speed or athleticism. A lack of match sharpness is to be expected after so long out of professional action, but Mudryk turned up to Chelsea’s pre-season tour ready to play in their friendlies.
It is also worth remembering that Mudryk was an unusually raw 22-year-old when Chelsea acquired him from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023, and there were times in his first 18 months at the club where he looked unsure of how to fit into a top-level tactical system.
He is hugely talented, but he will need patience and the right guidance.

What role will he play for Leeds?
If he arrived, Mudryk would compete for minutes in the left-sided No 10 slot behind a striker in United’s 3-4-2-1 shape. The Ukrainian is perhaps better known for cutting in from a wider slot on the left flank, but more would be expected of him in central positions, currently.
However, there is the flexibility for him to move wider, creating space for the team’s left wing-back, often Gabriel Gudmundsson, to underlap and drive inside down the channel. Leeds will be the underdog in most of their matches this season and if that means they play a more transitional or counter-attacking system, Mudryk’s pace and ball-carrying ability could be ideal.

Would he be a good signing for Leeds?
As long as the loan fee isn’t too onerous, Leeds should consider Mudryk a higher upside and lower cost bet than most permanent signings they could make on the wing this summer.
There is no doubt that he is itching to prove himself in the Premier League after everything that he has been through, and he would be minded to do everything in his power to make the season on loan a success. And, who knows, next summer might even yield an opportunity to buy him if all goes well?
Sure things don’t really exist in the transfer market, and certainly not within Leeds’ budget. They could do a lot worse than take a highly motivated Mudryk on loan.

Is being a Chelsea player an issue for Leeds fans?
No. Leeds fans do sing an especially cutting song about Chelsea, but there would be no animosity towards one of their players moving to Elland Road on loan.
