James Gunn confirms no DCU project is on hold
James Gunn has confirmed that no DCU project currently sits on hold. The DC Studios co-CE responded on Threads after reports suggested two shows faced cancellation. The Ankler had initially reportedthat both Waller and Paradise Lost were no longer in active development at HBO. The report came just days before Lanterns premiered on the streaming platform.
Entertainment Weekly later offereda more nuanced update on the situation. The outlet reported that neither project had been formally canceled by DC Studios. Instead, both shows remain in development at the studio, even though HBO has deprioritized them for now. The distinction suggests delayed timelines rather than outright cancellations for both projects.
Gunn stated on Threads, “No. Nothing is on hold.” His response came after fans asked whether the Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery merger had paused DCU projects. The confirmation also aligns with his recent denial ofThe Brave and the Bold being stalled. Gunn had previously said that the DCU Batman film “is in no way on hold.”
Gunn first announced Waller in January 2023 as a Peacemaker spinoff starring Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Christal Henry and Jeremy Carver wrote the series. DC Studios pitched Paradise Lost as a politically charged drama exploring the Amazons of Themyscira. Kira Snyder and Janet Lin both joined the project as of June 2026.
Gunn also described Paradise Lost as being in “extreme development” back in April 2026. He previously responded “Definitely not” on Threads when fans asked if the show had been shelved. HBO also greenlit the DCU comedy series The People v. Gorilla Grodd in mid-August 2026. Clayface hits theaters on October 23, 2026, while Man of Tomorrow targets July 2027.
