Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Carlos Baleba from Manchester United.
The Athletic reported last Fridaythat Baleba was set to undergo a medical with United the following day after they reached an agreement with Brighton for the midfielder, who had already verbally agreed personal terms with his new club. United will pay an initial £65million for Baleba with a potential £5m due in add-ons, while Brighton will retain a sell-on clause.
Baleba, 22, is currently out with an ankle ligament injury he sustained during pre-season and missed Brighton’s goalless draw with Tromso in the first leg of their Conference League qualifier on Thursday, as well as their Premier League win over Aston Villa.
United explored a deal for Baleba last summer and, though a move did not proceed, continued to track the Cameroon international during the 2025-25 season. The Athletic reported in April that United were still interested in a deal despite the player’s underwhelming season for Brighton compared to his previous two strong campaigns.
Would Baleba solve Man Utd’s midfield problems?

Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have already arrived to strengthen United’s midfield this summer, joining from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively for a combined £83m, with the pair starting together in their Premier League opener as they lost 2-0 at Hull City. The midfield department also includes academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo, club captain Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte, though the Uruguay international faces an extended period out after sustaining a knee ligament injury while playing for Uruguay at the World Cup this summer.
Baleba joined Brighton from French club Lille in the summer of 2023 and has featured 112 times for the club, though made only 23 Premier League starts last term.
What would Baleba bring to United?
Analysis from Manchester United writer Carl Anka
When Moises Caicedo made his £115m move to Chelsea in summer 2023, Brighton turned to Baleba to fill the void in defensive midfield.
Baleba’s three seasons on the south coast have seen him develop into one of the finest tacklers outside of the ‘Big Six’. The Cameroonian is physically tenacious, technically secure and an intelligent match reader. His underwhelming performances in 2025-26 should not be ignored, but he should be a good partner for Tielemans, Mainoo and Santos as Michael Carrick continues to rework United’s midfield.

Baleba’s aggression out of possession does not come at the expense of his elegance with a ball at his feet. He boasts an array of left-footed short passes that can ease congestion in midfield, and he is one of the more confident ball carriers through the middle when space opens up. The midfielder is a deceptively good long passer, opening the door for more attacking transitions that United’s forwards relish. Carrick and his coaching staff will hope to refine Baleba’s long passing, encouraging him to hit more switch passes to wingers such as Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, while reducing his tendency to hit speculative up-and-under punts into open space.
Baleba is an already-good player with the potential to become a great one for United. The club’s midfield now includes him, the 21-year-old Mainoo and the 22-year-old Santos. A trio that can grow together and form winning partnerships for many a season to come.
