Country legend and humanitarian Dolly Parton has died at 80.

No cause of death has been revealed, but Parton recently opened up about her health struggles after canceling a planned Las Vegas residency in May.

Parton’s nephew, Bryan Seaver, revealed the news in an Instagram video. “I’m representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean, Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next,” he said. “This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality. As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.”

“But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” he continued. “Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents and countless others who have watched her and longed to meet her in the heavens.”

Seaver added, “Dolly opened doors not just for me but for her entire family to reach the potential we didn’t even know was possible. Dolly also opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians and dreamers from every walk of life and across every continent.”

The news was confirmed through a statement from her representative:

“A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family. Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience. With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Her songs will continue to resonate with people of all ages, and her philanthropic work will have a lasting impact.”

Born on January 19th, 1946, Parton grew up in the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee as one of 12 children. After starting to write songs at the age of 5, she began singing on local radio and TV shows at just 10 years old and made her Grand Ole Opry debut at 13.

Following her high school graduation, Parton moved to Nashville, launched her professional music career, and met her longtime husband, Carl Dean. After signing a record deal with Monument Records and a publishing deal with Combine Music, Parton released her debut solo album, Hello, I’m Dolly, in 1967.

Her first country No. 1, “Joshua,” topped the Billboard charts in 1971, with “Jolene” — one of Parton’s most iconic songs and her first to reach the Hot 100 — reaching the same spot in 1974. Another one of Parton’s signature tracks, “I Will Always Love You,” also topped the country chart in 1974, and later became a No. 1 hit for Whitney Houston in 1992.

Parton’s success on the pop charts grew throughout the ’70s, crossing over with songs like “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” “Here You Come Again,” “Two Doors Down,” “Baby I’m Burnin’,” “Heartbreaker,” and “You’re the Only One.”

The ’80s began with Parton breaking into Hollywood, making her feature film debut in 9 to 5, followed by memorable roles in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Rhinestone, and Steel Magnolias. Later on, Parton made frequent cameos as herself on shows including The Simpsons, Reba, and The Orville, and played “Aunt Dolly” on the Miley Cyrus-starring Hannah Montana (Cyrus was her real-life goddaughter and occasional musical collaborator in later years).

Among Parton’s most acclaimed albums in the subsequent years were1987’s Trio with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, 1993’sSlow Dancing with the Moon, and 2014’s Blue Smoke.

Over her seven-decade career, Parton notched 25 Billboard country No. 1 hits, won 11 Grammy Awards, and earned inductions into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Parton was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, despite her early demurral. Shortly after she was revealed on the shortlist, she graciously asked to be removedfrom the ballot, saying, “Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated… I don’t feel that I have earned that right. I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out.” However, the Rock Hall kept her in consideration, and upon learning the institution honored musical greats across all genres, she just asgraciously acceptedher spot — with a promise to record a real rock ‘n roll record to feel she truly earned her spot.

She wasformally inducted in November 2022, and she performed at the ceremony alongside Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon, Pat Benatar, Eurythmics’s Annie Lennox, P!nk, Brandi Carlile, and Zac Brown Band. She used the stage to debut her song “Rockin’ It,” which would go on to appear as a bonus track on her 2023 LP Rockstar. The album featured a number of Parton originals and classic covers, with an immense guest list that included Miley Cyrus, Debbie Harry, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Linda Perry, Mick Fleetwood, Joan Jett, Ann Wilson, John Fogerty, Steven Tyler, and even a Beatles reunion of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr on“Let It Be.”Opening with thebiggest debut sales weekof her career,Rockstarwent Gold and earned Parton six No. 1 Billboard spots:Top Rock Albums, Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Country Albums, Top Album Sales, Top Current Album Sales, and Independent Albums.

Williams spoke about Parton’s convictions and spirit, and the country legend offered simple advice for how to live that sort of life: “Mostly, be true to yourself. My mama told me that when I was young and starting out on my own. She said, ‘Just be true to you.’ And that statement says a lot more than just the words. I said in a book I wrote one time, ‘Find out who you are and do it on purpose.’ That’s what that’s about; be as true to that as you can. We all fail, we all fall. Nobody’s perfect. The only perfect person was nailed to a cross, so how perfect can we be, right?”

Beyond music and acting, Partonwas one of the few public figures who was beloved by everyone. In a survey conducted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell in April 2026, she was found to be the most popular person in America with a net favorability of +65.

Parton was also well known for her many philanthropic and humanitarian efforts. In addition to donating millions to numerous causes spanning education, healthcare, and disaster relief, Parton spearheaded a variety of charitable efforts and organizations. In 1988, she founded The Dollywood Foundation, which provided scholarships to students from East Tennessee, and in 1995, she established Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which has since donated over 300 million free books to children worldwide.
