The current run, helmed by writer Ryan North with art from Humberto Ramos, Andrea Sorrentino, Andrea Di Vito, and Stan Sakai, has spent a year and a half creating tight, episodic stories of Marvel’s First Family. Now the series prepares for something bigger. The November 18 issue launches “The Dark Forest,” a storyline that unites the original team with the Junior Fantastic Four: Franklin and Valeria Richards plus Jo-Venn and N’Kalla. H.E.R.B.I.E. tags along too.
Ramos draws everyone in identical gear that resembles EVA suits minus the helmets. The padding and insulation suggest protection against hostile environments. These uniforms harken back to the suits worn during the Invincible Woman arc in issues #8-10, though the new versions look even more geared toward hyperspace survival. The retro design choices reinforce the team’s roots in 1960s space-race optimism.
The arc kicks off with the Fantastic Four building a telescope for their children. The device peers more into the universe than ever before and finds a technosignature: evidence of solar engineering from an advanced civilization. The family treats it as an invitation and travels across the universe to investigate. They reach out to find the society long dead. Whatever destroyed it still lingers.
North has built this run on hard sci-fi concepts and family dynamics. Previous arcs featured Nicholas Scratch, Galactus, and a twisted version of Susan Storm called the Invincible Woman. But “The Dark Forest” raises the stakes by putting the children directly in danger. The team cannot simply shield them from the threat. They must work together against a force that already wiped out one advanced species.
The costumes themselves tell the story. These are not fashion statements. They are survival gear. The team expects environments where unstable molecules alone cannot protect them. The retro-futurist look matches the tone: hopeful explorers facing something ancient and unknowable.
