UEFA regulations show Aston Villa could sign Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea without impacting the accrued profit from Morgan Rogers’ sale.
Villa sold Rogers to Chelsea in July in an agreement worth £117million — a record for a British player. In the meantime, Alejandro Garnacho moved in the opposite direction, joining Villa on a season-long loan with a conditional obligation based on appearances.
Following the completion of the deal for Rogers, eyes turned to a UEFA guideline which guards against the same two clubs completing another transfer inside a 45-day timeframe.
The guideline seeks to avoid clubs inflating their bottom lines through what the governing body terms ‘player exchange transactions’.
Where opposing deals are deemed an exchange transaction, UEFA limits the selling club to recognising their profit on sale at the book value of the player sale, adjusted for any net cash receivable in the context of the exchange transaction. More simply: any profit for the bigger seller of the two will be reduced to the net difference in fees; the smaller seller, likely to be Chelsea in this instance, would be able to record no profit on the sale at all.
Given Villa wished to pursue Jackson as a leading striker target in the event of one of their existing forwards leaving, it felt any transfer would be complicated by UEFA’s 45-day guideline. This is because Rogers joining Chelsea was completed with less than 45 days left in the transfer window, meaning Villa could not wait until that timeframe expired before making a possible move for Jackson.
The Athletic have reported this week that Villa are stepping up contingency plans to replace Ollie Watkins, with the striker keen on a move to Al Hilal. Villa have made approaches for Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, Rafael Leao from AC Milan and Christian Kofane from Bayer Leverkusen, yet Jackson is thought to be the preferred option of Unai Emery, having worked together at Villarreal. Any deal for Jackson would likely be in the region of £65million.

Villa are aware of a route to navigate the 45-day regulation, however.
The Athletic has learned the timing of such deals is just one factor considered rather than a determinant on its own, and a purchase from Chelsea this window would not automatically see UEFA deem the two deals of this summer as equivalent to a player exchange transaction. Instead, clubs can put forward their case to UEFA, who will assess whether it is an entirely separate transaction.
When approached by The Athletic, UEFA confirmed this was correct.
One factor that can be put forward is whether a club can argue they would ordinarily pursue a player from the other team regardless, as opposed to signing them for accounting reasons. Jackson, a player Emery has remained in dialogue with and shares a close relationship with, fits the profile of forward Villa are pursuing to replace Watkins. The argument would be that Villa’s interest in Jackson would be there if he were playing for any other side.
