If we were to tell you Warner Bros. was working on a new movie based on the classic cartoon, The Flintstones, that would make sense. Recognizable properties like that will always come back around. Now, if we were to tell you Ryan Gosling was one of the producers on this film, that would also sort of make sense. The actor is everywhere these days, and using his clout to get projects made seems like a smart use of that influence.
Now, with those two pieces of information, you immediately start to see a movie in your head. Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty, and the whole gang. But here’s where things get weird. That is not the movie in question. Warner Bros. is, indeed, looking to make a new Flintstones movie, and Ryan Gosling and his company are, actually, spearheading it. But the film would be about Bamm-Bamm, the son of Barney and Betty, as an adult.
Deadline broke the news of the project, which is currently out for writers and will be produced by Gosling and his producing partner, Jessie Henderson, for their company, Open Invite.
It’s unclear why Gosling and Henderson are going this route with the film or how the heck it would work out. It makes you think of something like Puss in Boots or Bumblebee, where a breakout character from a more popular film then got their own film. Only those movies had Shrek and Transformers movies beforehand. There wouldn’t be a Flintstones movie coming before this. It would just be Bamm-Bamm as an adult.
If this was 30 years ago and The Flintstones movie starring John Goodman, Rick Moranis, Elizabeth Perkins, and Rosie O’Donnell had just come out to mega success, you’d get it. But that, of course, is not the case. Gosling and Henderson must have a killer idea here for Warner Bros. to be interested, or maybe it’s something Gosling himself would be starring in. That’s purely speculative, but how else can you explain this as the route Warner Bros. is backing? An adult Bamm-Bamm solo movie. Wild.
