Aston Villa have agreed a deal worth a total package of £65million to sign Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea.
Villa will pay £47.5m upfront for the Senegal international, for whom terms at Villa Park are in the process of being finalised.
Villa’s move for the 25-year-old, who has been a long-standing target for the club and a favourite of Unai Emery, would be the third time the clubs have done business this summer with Morgan Rogers heading to Stamford Bridge in a club-record £117m transfer, while Alejandro Garnacho later joining Villa on a season-long loan, with a conditional obligation to buy.
Jackson previously worked under Emery at Villarreal, where the striker scored 13 goals before joining Chelsea in the summer of 2023.
The forward joined Chelsea in 2023 from Villarreal in a £32m deal, signing an eight-year contract at Stamford Bridge, and has gone on to score 30 goals in 81 appearances.
The Athletic reported in June that Chelsea were willing to reintegrate Jackson into the squad and he featured for the club in pre-season, travelling to Sydney for friendlies.
He spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Bayern Munich, helping the German side secure a record-extending 34th Bundesliga title. He made 23 league appearances, scoring eight goals and providing two assists during his spell in Germany.
The agreement with Bayern included an initial €16.5m loan fee and a conditional obligation to buy worth €65m. Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeness said the obligation to buy clause would only be met if Jackson started 40 games, not including the German Cup. However, Jackson started just 13 times in the Bundesliga and Champions League during his season at Bayern.
Jackson has won 37 caps for Senegal since making his international debut against the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup, scoring eight international goals.
Wait, won’t this impact Villa’s profit from Rogers? Well …
Analysis by football finance writer Chris Weatherspoon
The assumption from most had been that the signing of Nicolas Jackson this window, or, indeed, any permanent signing of a Chelsea player, would impact Villa’s whopping profit on the departure of Morgan Rogers to Stamford Bridge in late July.
Where UEFA deems clubs to have engaged in a ‘player exchange transaction’, they require profits to be downgraded to the net cash difference in fees. That would be bad for both clubs, with each needing to get losses down under their settlement agreements with the European governing body.
UEFA adjusted rules around such transactions to capture deals made within 45 days of one another, something which would seem to deter Villa from buying from Chelsea: Rogers’ deal completed less than 45 days before this transfer window’s end.
Yet The Athletic has learned the timing of such deals is just one factor considered rather than a determinant on its own, and a purchase from Chelsea this window would not automatically see UEFA deem the two deals of this summer as equivalent to a player exchange transaction. Similarly, a deal made outside of a 45-day window could still be deemed a player exchange transaction, if other factors listed under the rule are present.
There is, then, room for manoeuvre. Villa’s continued pursuit of Jackson is proof enough.
