Newcastle United have completed the signing of midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City.

The Magpies have made Gonzalez their seventh summer signing, paying an initial £48million to City, with the deal featuring a further £4m in potential add-ons.

After completing a medical on Tyneside on Wednesday, the signing of Gonzalez was announced ahead of their EFL Cup tie with Championship side West Brom.

Gonzalez will be expected to go straight into the team for Newcastle’s Premier League clash with Tottenham in North London on Saturday.

“I’m really happy to be here at this amazing club,” Gonzalez told Newcastle’s official website. “I’ve only heard top words about the club and the city, so I’m really excited to live here and to be part of this project.

“I love the black and white shirt already and I can’t wait to start wearing it on the pitch for this club.

“I’ve experienced playing at St. James’ Park twice with Manchester City and it was really tough. The atmosphere was amazing and the fans are so passionate. I can’t wait to experience that as a home player.”

Head coach Matthias Jaissle said: “I’m very happy to see Nico become a Newcastle United player. He brings serious quality and elite experience in a key area of the pitch.

“Nico is a really strong ball carrier – somebody who can drive the team forward while staying composed under pressure. He also brings discipline defensively, he reads the game well and his physicality makes him well suited to the Premier League.

“Nico is a proven winner who has already played at some huge clubs in Europe’s top leagues, but he’s also still young and hungry to develop further. He is a fantastic addition to our squad.”

The 24-year-old made 59 appearances in all competitions for City after joining from Porto in 2025. He scored four goals, including a stunning winner in the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton last season.

Now he will become the leader of a Newcastle midfield that has undergone significant changes this summer.

Gonzalez set for crucial role in Newcastle midfield

The arrival of the former Barcelona midfielder is the most significant of the transfer window for Newcastle, his signing helping fill the void left by former captain Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, who left for Arsenal and Tottenham respectively.

He is the third midfielder to join Newcastle this summer, joining 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba.

Academy product Lewis Miley is a rising star who excelled in their thrilling season-opening 2-2 draw with Liverpool last Sunday, and he is the most likely midfield partner for Gonzalez against Spurs.

While Newcastle have plenty of young talent in their engine room, Gonzalez gives Newcastle a vastly more experienced defensive midfielder who can slot in immediately as their number six in new boss Jaissle’s system.

Gonzalez’s aptitude in possession should make him a huge asset to Newcastle. Since the Spaniard made his Premier League debut for City in February last year, only former team-mate Rodri (87) has made more successful passes per 90 minutes in the division than Gonzalez (68), according to Opta.

Newcastle are still hopeful of adding further to their ranks before the September 1 transfer deadline. Their next signing is likely to be an attacker, with Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Stuttgart’s Bilal El Khannouss thought to be among their targets.
