Andrew Garfield’s new period drama movie is leaving fans confused. A recently released synopsis for the film contradicts the previously assumed details about its plot.
The Uprising, starring Andrew Garfield, was originally believed to be a period drama about the 1381 English Peasants’ Revolt. However, the movie recently released a new tagline on X which says, “The Rise of Robin Hood.” This reveals that the film is actually about the famous English folk legend. However, the legend of Robin Hood takes place centuries before the revolt.
The new plot synopsis reads, “Set against the true events of the Uprising that helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood.” It adds that Garfield’s character “forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice.” The project was initially billed as the story of “a birth of a legend.”
Needless to say, fans are confused that the movie decided to reveal itself as a Robin Hood tale just ahead of its September 11 release.
One X user, @DerWaidmann_, commented, “I thought this movie was about the peasant revolt, when did it become about Robin Hood.” Another fan, @Ace19072954, said, “This is a Robin Hood movie? I thought this was just a medieval rebellion movie.”
According to The Uprising’s IMDB, Garfield plays a character called “Ploughman,” who will likely become the legendary outlaw. Other cast members include Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Jonny Lee Miller, Thomasin McKenzie and Cosmo Jarvis.

Besides The Uprising, another Robin Hood movie has already hit theaters earlier this year. A24’s The Death of Robin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman as the titular legend, arrived in the U.S. on June 19. The film is an adaptation of the 17th-century ballad Robin Hood’s Death. It tells the story of an aged Robin Hood living in isolation, haunted by the sins of his past.
In addition to Jackman, The Death of Robin Hood also stars Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, Noah Jupe, Clive Russell, and more.
