Draft evaluation is a humbling business. We make our living projecting what 17- and 18-year-old hockey players are going to look like in the NHL. Sometimes you hit the nail on the head. Other times, you look back four years later and wonder what exactly you were watching.
Now that we are comfortably in the summer of 2026, the 2022 NHL Draft class has started to solidify. We have four years of data, developmental arcs and NHL samples to work with.
With that in mind, it’s time to eat some crow. Here’s a look at the 10 biggest misses from my final 2022 ranking.
1. Lane Hutson, LHD
My original rank: 24
My 2026 re-draft rank: 3
What I got wrong: I knew Hutson was extremely smart, but I underrated just how off the charts his offense would be at higher levels. He has also defended better in the NHL than I expected him to, given his lack of premier athletic traits, even if it’s still not the selling point of his game.

2. David Jiříček, RHD
My original rank: 4
My 2026 re-draft rank: 32
What I got wrong: I thought Jiříček would be a high-offense, physical two-way defenseman in the NHL with skating issues. Instead, he’s been an average offensive pro, who is so-so in his own end despite having good size due to his skating and the nasty elements in his game seemingly vanishing over the last couple of years.
3. Jimmy Snuggerud, RW
My original rank: 29
My 2026 re-draft rank: 5
What I got wrong: I thought Snuggerud would be a skilled goal-scorer with size and a good compete level, but I wasn’t blown away by his puck play or his skating. He’s gone on to make way more plays in college and ultimately in the NHL than I saw as a draft-eligible player, and has shown he can be a legit play driver despite average feet.
4. Joakim Kemell, RW
My original rank: 7
My 2026 re-draft rank: 51
What I got wrong: I thought Kemell would be a special 5-foot-11 winger due to high-end skill and compete. His compete is quite good, and he can shoot it, but the talent isn’t anything special for his size. He’s a good skater who can make plays, but the skill doesn’t jump off the page in the AHL like I thought it would.
5. Matt Savoie, RW
My original rank: 8
My 2026 re-draft rank: 37
What I got wrong: Like with Kemell, I thought Savoie would have special enough traits to be a legit difference-maker at his size. He’s still an excellent skater and puck handler who works hard, but at 5-10, you need to be elite offensively like Hutson to make a dent in the NHL and Savoie hasn’t shown that level of skill/hockey IQ; rather, he’s more of a Kailer Yamamoto type of prospect.
6. Frank Nazar, C
My original rank: 22
My 2026 re-draft rank: 6
What I got wrong: I loved Nazar’s speed and compete, but I saw a smaller center who had good, but not great offense, and I questioned how high up a lineup he would play. His college years seemed to vindicate my concerns, but once he turned pro, a light went on, and he’s been outstanding in Chicago’s system. He has the great effort and pace to go with the ability to make high-end plays.
7. Shane Wright, C
My original rank: 2
My 2026 re-draft rank: 7
What I got wrong: A drop of only five spots might not seem like a big deal, but at the very top of the draft, it’s an enormous difference in value. Ranking Wright second meant I would have taken him over Logan Cooley. Wright’s somewhat vanilla game in junior has carried over to the pros. He’s still a very talented and competitive center who I think will have a long NHL career, but nothing about his game truly stands out to keep him at the true premier levels of this class.
8. Jonathan Lekkerimäki, RW
My original rank: 11
My 2026 re-draft rank: 50
What I got wrong: I ranked Lekkerimäki just outside the top 10, buying heavily into his high-end skill and shot. I overrated how his game would translate up levels, as a smaller, perimeter shooter who doesn’t have elite skating.
9. Sandis Vilmanis, LW
My original rank: 100
My 2026 re-draft rank: 26
What I got wrong: I had Vilmanis ranked exactly at 100th, viewing him as a long-shot flier. He’s one I kick myself on a bit because I liked the tools when I watched him in his draft year, but I didn’t elevate him due to a lack of scoring. He’s fast and competitive and has enough skill to project to play in the league.
10. Conor Geekie, C
My original rank: 23
My 2026 re-draft rank: 8
What I got wrong: I let my concerns about his heavy skating stride cloud my evaluation of his pure offensive toolkit. I pushed a 6-4 center with great hands, sense and a big shot outside my top 20. While his foot speed remains an issue and he hasn’t quite broken through in the NHL yet, his ability to make highly skilled plays and the premium role he plays as a scoring center make him a high-value prospect.
