Bob Myers made countless consequential decisions while helping build the Golden State Warriors into a dynasty, but one still stands above the rest for him emotionally: trading Andre Iguodala.
Asked which basketball decision was the hardest during Golden State’s championship era, Myers immediately pointed to the 2019 move that sent Iguodala to the Memphis Grizzlies as part of the maneuvering required to acquire D’Angelo Russell.
“Trading Iguodala. We had to trade a guy who’d won three championships with the team, in 2019, to sign D’Angelo Russell.”
Iguodala had already become much more than a role player by that point. He had been a central part of Golden State’s first three championships, won Finals MVP in 2015 and developed into one of the most trusted veterans in the organization. That is what made the transaction so difficult for Myers.
“And the way he took it, the professionalism. As far as a player handling a tough thing, I’ve never seen one do it as well as he did in that moment.”
The move was ultimately driven by roster mechanics and Golden State’s attempt to preserve talent after Kevin Durant’s departure. The Warriors acquired Russell from Brooklyn in a sign-and-trade, and creating the necessary financial flexibility meant moving Iguodala and attaching a protected first-round pick to Memphis.
For Myers, though, the transaction never felt purely financial.
“To call a guy, that’s when it gets personal and say, we are trading you. We trade him to Memphis. And he knew it wasn’t a team trying to win. We were putting him in a situation.”
Memphis at the time was in the early stages of a rebuild around younger players. Iguodala never appeared in a game for the Grizzlies and was eventually traded to Miami, where he immediately returned to the NBA Finals in 2020.
“By the way, he ended up going to the Heat and going to the Finals again after that. Five years in a row with us, he went six with Miami.”
Myers said what stayed with him most was Iguodala’s reaction.
“But Andre looked at me and said, ‘I understand. You got to do what you got to do.’ And it wasn’t fair. It wasn’t right. When a player does that much for you and your organization and you make a decision where he deserved better… There was no easy way around it.”
That tension captures one of the realities of NBA front-office work. Executives are expected to maximize roster value, manage salary rules and make decisions that protect a franchise’s future. But those decisions often involve people with whom they have spent years building trust.
Myers ultimately believes he did what his job required. That does not mean he believes every consequence of the decision felt right.
“I did my job. But the thing I miss and loved most was the relationships. I don’t talk to these rings I have at my house. I don’t watch old highlights. I call Draymond Green. I call Steph Curry. I call Iguodala. That’s what I miss.”

That may be the most revealing part of Myers’ reflection.
The Warriors’ dynasty is usually measured in championships, records and iconic playoff moments. For the executive who helped construct it, however, the lasting memories appear to be more personal.
