Another live-action Disney+ project has been canceled, adding to the growing list of shows scrapped by the streaming platform. The planned Gargoyles adaptation is officially no longer moving forward, with series creator Greg Weisman confirming that the live-action project has been abandoned.
The cancellation comes amid a string of setbacks for Disney+, following the axing of Wonder Man Season 2 and the shelving of plans for a new Power Rangers series.
Live-Action Gargoyles series canceled at Disney+
The long-discussed live-action Gargoyles project at Disney+ has officially been canceled. Greg Weisman, the creator of the original animated series, confirmed that the planned adaptation is no longer in development, leaving the future of the franchise uncertain. At present, there are also no confirmed plans for a new animated series.
The live-action project had been in development through Atomic Monster, which held the license to develop a live-action Gargoyles series for Disney+. Weisman confirmed that the project had been abandoned during an interview with Comics Online.
“Well, I know the live-action side of it is, uh, the Atomic Monster had the license to develop a live-action Gargoyles for Disney+, and that’s dead. I have no idea about animation, but there are no current plans for live-action,” the creator said.
While the possibility of returning to animation has been discussed, no new project has been confirmed. The original Gargoyles series was produced by Walt Disney Television Animation and aired from 1994 to 1997. Despite running for just three seasons, the show built a devoted fan base and went on to become a cult favorite. Weisman created the series alongside producer Frank Paur and designer Greg Guler.
The cancellation also adds Gargoyles to a growing list of projects reportedly scrapped by Disney+, including Power Rangers and Wonder Man Season 2. With the live-action adaptation now officially off the table, fans will have to wait for any future updates on whether the beloved franchise could eventually make a return.
