Xolo Maridueña left fans guessing about his role in the upcoming Superman sequel. The actor played coy when asked about suiting up again as Blue Beetle for Man of Tomorrow. Maridueña learned of his DC Studios comeback via a surprise phone call from James Gunn while traveling in Japan. Although Maridueña now expresses excitement, his careful wording keeps details about his appearance vague.

Xolo Maridueña explained that he had no prior warning before James Gunn reached out. “I was in Japan with my friends; nobody knew anything,” Maridueña told Variety. “And I just see, like the Bat-phone, my phone rings [and it’s] James Gunn. All my friends look at me, and I had to leave the room. I came back, and I was like, ‘Off the record, don’t tell anyone, but we’re coming back,’ and I’m so excited for people to see where Blue Beetle ends up,” he added.
Yet when pressed about stepping back into the Blue Beetle superhero suit, Xolo Maridueña turned evasive. He was asked what it felt like to wear the costume again. Maridueña responded with apparent confusion. “I mean, I don’t even know. I haven’t yet. What do you mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’m not too sure what you mean by that,” he said.
This response raises legitimate questions about his role in the film. However, the actor did address the uncertainty surrounding his career. “There’s never a guarantee with anything, bro,” he said. “I mean, you know this, stuff flips on a dime, and I know that it’s not always like a merit-based system. So there’s so much that’s out of my control, but I am just the most humbled of James and the greater DC team for folding us in, Indiana Jones style,” he added.
Man of Tomorrow brings back David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The sequel sees the unlikely duo teaming up against Brainiac. Milly Alcock, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced also star.
