The Arizona State University Police Department is investigating the events surrounding the collapse and hospitalization of hockey player Matthew Mayich, two people familiar with the investigation confirmed to The Athletic.
Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. One said the law enforcement agency is assessing whether any criminal acts occurred and said this investigation is separate from the “review” the university has said it is conducting. The other said police have begun the process of reaching out to players.
The Arizona State University Police Department’s public information officer did not immediately respond to a request for comment. An Arizona State spokesman said it was “standard practice” for the ASUPD to investigate serious injuries that occur on campus.
Mayich, 21, collapsed after an outdoor, on-campus workout Aug. 20. He remains hospitalized and in critical condition, according to Mayich family attorney Rob Carey: “This injury is from exertional heat stroke that caused a lack of oxygen to the brain. There were no other contributing conditions, only exertion-related heat. This is not an induced coma. We need a miracle.”
In a statement, Carey called the police investigation “a step in the right direction.”
“But there are standards for doing this properly,” the statement continued. “Collect and preserve evidence, including what might have been deleted; use subpoenas and warrants; get unfettered access to university systems; interview witnesses separately and protect them from retaliation; and be transparent about the process and the findings. So long as those standards are followed and the lead investigator can act independently, we support it.”
The Aug. 20 training session, which took place on the first day allowed by NCAA rules, was led by a non-university employee with military experience. Multiple people described the session as a punishing military-style workoutin which players were made to do sprints, planks, pushups and bear crawls with an emphasis on repeating instructions back to the instructor and keeping a correct count of each exercise. Players who failed to do either or lagged behind other groups were forced to complete extra sprints or exercises.
At 8:31 a.m. that day, Tempe Fire Medical Rescue responded to a call for a “heat-related illness” at Sun Angel Stadium on Arizona State’s campus. Ten minutes later, a radio call from one of the first responders asked for a nearby hospital emergency room to prepare to receive a male with a “serious heat emergency.”
The temperature in Tempe that morning was 86 degrees, according to the Weather Underground’s online database, with no wind and 51 percent humidity. Under those conditions, the National Weather Service recommends 15 minutes of breaks within every hour of exercise.
The Athletic confirmed that the instructor who led the workout was Tim Ziesel. Ziesel has not responded to repeated calls, text messages and an email with detailed questions about what took place.
Arizona State executive vice president James Rund is leading the university’s review of the incident, school spokesman Chris Fiscus said last week. In a subsequent interview with Arizona Sports 98.7, Arizona State athletic director Graham Rossini emphasized the distinction between a “review” and “an investigation where someone is suggesting something went wrong. We’re just reviewing the facts and understanding the scenario.”
The Arizona State Police Department operates independently of the Tempe Police Department and has jurisdiction over land owned by the Arizona Board of Regents, the governing body of Arizona’s public university system.
Mayich transferred to Arizona State from Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y., this past offseason. The St. Louis Blues selected Mayich, a sophomore defenseman from Stoney Creek, Ontario, in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft.
