In less than a year, Mark Cuban went from declaring himself on “Team Ballmer” to congratulating journalist Pablo Torre.
Torre spent the last year investigating the LA Clippers for salary-cap circumvention, and on Wednesday, the NBA handed the franchise and owner Steve Ballmer the largest punishment in league history for funneling millions of dollars to Kawhi Leonard.
Shortly after the news broke, Cuban, the former Dallas Mavericks owner, took to social media to commend Torre.
“Congrats Pablo,” Cuban wrote above an embedded post detailing the penalties for the Clippers, Ballmer and Leonard.
The NBA suspended Ballmer for one year, fined the Clippers $30 million, revoked the franchise’s first-round picks from 2029 through 2033 and ordered Leonard to pay the league back $700,000.

The cap circumvention scheme began in 2019, according to the NBA’s yearlong investigation, when Leonard, then a free agent, and his uncle and former business manager, Dennis Robertson, “violated the circumvention rules by pressuring the Clippers to assist him in obtaining off-court income opportunities, successfully obtaining those opportunities, and failing to reimburse payments by the Clippers for personal expenses.”
The investigation stemmed from a Sept. 3, 2025, episode of the podcast “Pablo Torre Finds Out,” which reported that Leonard accepted a $28 million no-show contract with Aspiration, a West Coast environmental company that sponsored the Clippers’ jersey patches until the end of the 2022-23 season.
When Torre released his first of several episodes investigating the cap-circumvention scheme between the Clippers and Leonard, Cuban expressed skepticism regarding Ballmer’s involvement.
“I’m on Team Ballmer,” Cuban posted on X on Sept. 3, 2025. “As much as I wish they circumvented the salary cap, First Steve isn’t that dumb. If he did try to feed KL money, knowing what was at stake for him personally, and his team, do you think he would let the company go bankrupt? Knowing all creditors would be visible to the world? They got scammed by Aspiration, along with many others. Crimes for which they pleaded guilty last week. Scammers do scammy things. … It’s sad that @PabloTorre didn’t take the time to find out how these scammers pulled off their scam. The idea that the default is Ballmer is the bad guy is going to back fire on him.”
Two days later, Cuban appeared on Torre’s podcast to discuss the investigation in a conversation that grew heated at times. Cuban questioned Torre’s sourcing before Torre provided documents detailing payments made to Leonard. Cuban returned for another episode in October.
On Wednesday, after the NBA announced its findings and penalties against the Clippers, Ballmer and Leonard, Cuban conceded his defense of Ballmer.
