Eddie Hearn has revealed he has been instructed by Sela to try to broker a deal with the Mayor of London to bring the heavyweight showdown between Britain’s Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua to London.

The Matchroom Sport chairman posted on Instagram on Friday: “You (the UK fans) have been heard and talks have now reopened for Wembley (Stadium). Let’s make history with one of the biggest sporting moments.”

Former world champions Fury, 38, and Joshua, 36, both signed individual contracts in April this year for a fight, but there was no confirmation of a date or a venue.

There is still a strong chance the fight ends up at Madison Square Garden in New York City, as nothing has yet been agreed to switch to London, but Hearn’s revelation has seemingly brought the English capital back to the table.

Sela, the Public Investment Fund-owned Saudi Arabian entertainment company, along with Saudi boxing powerbroker Turki Al-Sheikh, has been working with broadcaster Netflix on securing what they believe is the best site for the fight.

They have pushed for a U.S. venue, believing that the audience figures would be bigger globally if the bout takes place at peak time in a U.S. time zone. Las Vegas was first explored before Madison Square Garden became the frontrunner, with November 20 as the date pencilled in.

Both fighters’ individual contracts stipulated a location the fight must take place in. It is not known what location is in Fury’s contract but Hearn has publicly stated Joshua’s is the U.K.

Last week, Joshua’s promoter did send an addendum to the contract to Sela that, if agreed upon, would allow the fight to take place in New York, with Fury having already agreed to the location.

However, Hearn has continually stated they want the bout at Wembley Stadium and now talks have begun over potentially bringing it there.

“I think everybody has been kind of flabbergasted at a corporate level in the fight, by quite a wave of support for a UK fight,” Hearn told The Athletic.

“I mean, it’s not like it’s a surprise to anyone, but basically we had conversations with Sela this morning and they want to start conversations with Wembley again and (Mayor of London) Sadiq Khan. So it’s the first time, obviously, they’ve said, all right, well, let’s look at Wembley again.

“Because everything was just like, ‘It has to be New York, it has to be New York’. So just for me, it’s I think the wave of public support has got everybody’s attention.

“And we’ve now been asked by Sela to have conversations with Wembley and Sadiq Khan about dates and the possibility of certainly a slightly later start time.”

Sela and Netflix would want the bout to still take place at a better time for a U.S. TV audience, so the Mayor of London and Brent Council, which would be dictated by Wembley’s safety advisory group, would need to extend the current 11pm curfew at Wembley Stadium.

Organisers would want the main event to start at 2am local time in the U.K, according to sources briefed on the process.

Khan told BBC Sport on Thursday: “A message to the promoters — we want to host it in London. Talk to us, we’re really keen to have it.”

Contact has now been made with the Mayor of London’s office by the promoters, sources added.

Hearn said: “So what I’m doing is I’m kind of saying to these people, listen, you’re saying it’s all about the start time. So if I get this start time, what’s the problem?”

Hearn added that it is “50-50” on whether or not they can strike an agreement to push back the Wembley curfew, which would be critical to the fight being staged in London.

Asked why, having sent an addendum last week seemingly willing to go to the U.S., has there been another push this week to stage the fight in the UK, Hearn said: “Literally the last 24 hours, AJ’s gone, ‘Do you know what? I can’t be bothered to keep going back on this contract. Just tell them, honor your contract.’

“He is seeing the wave of support and he thinks, ‘This is great.’”

When contacted by The Athletic, Fury’s manager Spencer Brown said: “We will fight him on the moon. We would love it in England or New York.”

Sela has also been contacted for comment.
