In his first social media post since commenting in the wake of his devastating UFC White House loss to Justin Gaethje, Topuria reflected on his defeat with a short video essay framed as a message to his son, Hugo.
Topuria entered UFC White House this past June as an undefeated fighter, defending his lightweight title for the first time after previously winning three championship bouts at 145 pounds. He was a heavy favorite to remain unbeaten, but Gaethje put on one of the most memorable title fight performances in UFC history, and left Topuria to battered to make it out for the fifth and final round.
In his initial post-fight statement, Topuria gave all the credit to Gaethje and vowed that there will be a rematch. His most recent post is a declaration that his loss has only made him better.
“Hugo, I’ve been thinking about you these past two days,” Topuria said. “About what you felt when you saw me go down. I know it hurt you, and as your dad, I would’ve done anything to spare you from that moment. But I’m also glad we went through it together. Because that day made both of us stronger.
“I want you to always remember one thing, you won’t always win in life, and that’s OK, because losing isn’t what matters. What matters is how you lose, who you choose to be when everything goes dark. When you have to choose between staying on the ground or getting back up. I think God wanted me to go through that moment to teach me something no victory ever could. Character doesn’t show up when everything’s going your way. It shows up when life throws its hardest day at you, and you know what I found? After going through that hell, I’m stronger than I was before, because a champion isn’t someone who never falls. It’s someone who always finds a reason to get back up.”
Topuria reportedly suffered extensive facial injuries in his loss to Gaethje, though he did not need to undergo surgery. A timetable for his return is yet to be established.
Gaethje awaits the opponent for his first defense as undisputed champion, with several top contenders in the mix, including Arman Tsarukyan, Mauricio Ruffy, and Max Holloway, with Topuria presumably an option as well depending on when he is ready to fight again. At the moment, that’s not Topuria’s concern, as he is still pondering what he learned in his first-ever defeat.
“That’s all I want for you,” Topuria said in his message to Hugo. “Not that you always win, but that you’re never afraid to lose. That no defeat ever gets to tell you who you are. Only you get to decide that, and no matter what happens, always remember this: Character is the one victory no one can ever take away from you.”
