Benjamin Sesko scored his first goal of the season for Manchester United but was left frustrated after Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ late strike secured a 2-2 draw at Everton on Sunday.
The Slovenian striker came off the bench at the Hill Dickinson Stadium and looked to have repeated his impact from last season, when he regularly made a difference after being introduced as a substitute.
However, Maitland-Niles’ spectacular effort in the final minute denied United all three points and left Sesko disappointed despite his own contribution.
The 23-year-old had missed much of pre-season through injury and has been eased back into action in recent weeks, making substitute appearances against Hull City and Ipswich Town.
He needed less than 20 minutes to make his mark against Everton.
Sesko makes instant impact
Sesko was introduced from the bench and quickly gave United the lead with a powerful header from Luke Shaw’s cross.
The effort proved too strong for Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and appeared to have put United on course for a valuable away win.
Instead, Maitland-Niles produced a stunning late strike to earn Everton a point and leave Sesko and his teammates frustrated.
Speaking to MUTV after the match, Sesko admitted that the late equaliser was particularly difficult to accept given how close United had come to securing victory.
“We’re very disappointed of course because we were very close [to winning] and yet so far,” he said.
“To concede a goal like that in the last minute, it’s painful for everyone because everyone was giving everything to try and win the game.
“Every single person here wants that. In the moments like this where a last shot decides it, it’s very painful.”
Sesko happy to be back
Despite the disappointment of the result, Sesko was pleased to find the net and continue his return to full fitness.
The striker said scoring remains one of the best feelings for him, particularly when he can contribute directly to United’s results.
“For me, it’s the best feeling when I’m scoring, especially for the club like that,” Sesko said.
“When I can provide the goals and the points for the team – it’s my job at the end of the day. It’s nice to be back with the team to experience all the games again.
“Of course I wish today that we had won, but we can’t change that.”
