Jacob Tobey will return to the San Antonio Spurs’ broadcast booth for the 2026-27 season, less than two months after his future with the organization appeared to be in serious doubt following a highly publicized controversy involving his personal life.
The Spurs have confirmed that Tobey will continue as the team’s television play-by-play announcer, reversing the uncertainty that surrounded his position after reports in July said he was out of the role.
The situation began when posts appeared on Tobey’s Instagram account accusing him of being unfaithful to his longtime girlfriend with Loren Waters, the sister of then-Spurs player Lindy Waters III. Tobey’s girlfriend later indicated on her own social-media account that she had made the posts. The allegations quickly spread online and were followed by reports that Tobey was no longer serving as San Antonio’s lead announcer.
Tobey did not publicly address the details of the allegations, and neither he nor the Spurs has publicly confirmed the specific claims surrounding his personal relationship.
On Friday, Tobey broke his silence and confirmed that he would be back.
“I thank the Spurs for allowing me time to step away to sort out issues in my personal life. I understand that I will have to regain trust within the organization and across our community, a community where I will continue to be present with enthusiasm and passion. I believe I have the best job in the world and am thrilled to be able to continue as the team’s play-by-play announcer”
The Spurs subsequently confirmed that Tobey remains their play-by-play voice “today and into the future,” according to KENS 5.
Tobey has called Spurs games since 2024, when he succeeded longtime broadcaster Bill Land. He had established himself alongside former Spurs star Sean Elliott in the television booth and reportedly signed a multiyear extension with the organization earlier this summer, before the controversy became public.
His return represents a significant turnaround from July, when Front Office Sports reported that Tobey was out as the team’s lead announcer following the accusations. The outlet has maintained that its original reporting was accurate and characterized the latest development as the Spurs reversing course rather than the initial report being incorrect.
The controversy also generated debate over how much an employee’s private conduct should affect a professional broadcasting role. Some public figures argued that the allegations, while personally damaging, should not necessarily have ended Tobey’s career with the Spurs.
San Antonio has not offered a detailed public explanation for why Tobey was brought back, and Tobey himself did not elaborate on what occurred during his time away.
Instead, his statement centered on accountability and rebuilding trust.
