Brendan Fraser confirmed that production on The Mummy 4 begins Monday morning,CANAL+reported (translated from French). The actor shared the update while receiving a Deauville Talent Award at the Festival du Cinéma Américain de Deauville this weekend. “I have to be at work Monday morning,” Fraser told the outlet during the festival.
The Mummy 4 reunites Fraser with Rachel Weisz for the first time since The Mummy Returns in 2001. Weisz did not reprise the role of Evelyn in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008. Maria Bello replaced her in that third installment.
John Hannah returns as Jonathan, while Oded Fehr reprises his role as Ardeth Bay. Kevin J. O’Connor also comes back as Beni, despite his character’s definitive death in the original film. The casting choice already raises questions about the still-secret screenplay.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence direct the sequel, replacing original filmmaker Stephen Sommers. David Coggeshall wrote the screenplay for the fourth installment. The directing duo previously helmed Wedding Nightmare, Scream VI, and Abigail together.
Fraser, now 57, joked about stepping back from performing his own stunts this time around. He imagined telling stunt performers on set, “You’re going to be great on this shot, go for it!” The actor has previously discussed how physically demanding action roles took a serious toll on his body.
Fraser described the experience of returning to Rick O’Connell after 27 years warmly. “It’s like reconnecting with an old friend,” he shared at Deauville. He previously stated he waited twenty years for the call and called this installment the Mummy film he always wanted to make. The Mummy 4 arrives in theaters on October 13, 2027.
