Tom Cruise is bringing his Top Gun: Maverick experience to Days of Thunder 2. He wants the cars’ speed and movement to help tell the story.
The 64-year-old actor is set to return as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in the sequel. During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Cruise explained how his experience on Maverick is going to help the Days of Thunder sequel.
Cruise spent years developing the aerial work for Top Gun: Maverick, including extensive flight training and work on how to capture action from inside aircraft. The film used real aerial footage and put its cast through demanding flight preparation to make the cockpit scenes feel authentic.
That experience is now influencing how Cruise wants to film the racing action in Days of Thunder 2.
How Cruise’s Days of Thunder 2 is similar to Top Gun: Maverick
On the Pat McAfee Show, Tom Cruise explained that he is looking at NASCAR through the same focus on movement and photography as he did with planes in Top Gun 2.
The Mission: Impossible star explained, “I spent years training in aerobatics—from helicopters to jets to airplanes—and studying aerial photography and creating aerial photography. So, we’re creating stories, like, what can I tell with the motion? Those are things that I’m looking at with NASCAR and with these cars.”
The approach means the cars will do more than simply provide fast action. Cruise wants their movement to become part of how the story is told.
During the appearance, Cruise also revealed why he plans to drive himself. “Here’s the thing: If I’m making a movie about airplanes, I’m flying. If I’m making a movie about cars—no, I’m driving.” The sequel comes nearly four decades after Tony Scott’s 1990 original. That film introduced Cruise as Cole Trickle, a talented driver entering the NASCAR world under veteran crew chief Harry Hogge.
Jonathan Levine will direct the sequel from a screenplay by Will Staples. Cruise is producing alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. Anne Hathaway has also joined the cast as a racing-team owner and engineer. Her character will bring a new figure into Cole’s racing world.
Days of Thunder 2 is scheduled for an IMAX release on June 2, 2028. The sequel brings Cruise back to the role that helped establish him as a major action star.
