LeBron James has entered the prediction-market business, and the timing of his new partnership with Polymarket is already generating plenty of attention.

James has agreed to become Polymarket’s first individual athlete partner after his previous multiyear ambassador deal with DraftKings expired.

The partnership is notable for an obvious reason: Polymarket had just hosted one of the largest markets surrounding James himself.

Its “LeBron James Next Team” market generated approximately $44 million in trading volume as users speculated about where he would sign in free agency. James ultimately joined the Philadelphia 76ers, an outcome that had been viewed as relatively unlikely by prediction-market traders before the decision became public.

That creates unusual optics around the deal. There is no evidence that James personally traded on the market, influenced its operation or provided Polymarket with nonpublic information about his free-agency decision. There is also no indication that the newly announced partnership existed while those contracts were actively trading. Still, the fact that millions of dollars were being exchanged based on an event over which James himself had complete control makes his subsequent commercial relationship with the platform particularly noticeable.

The partnership also comes after James’ previous association with a more traditional sportsbook. DraftKings announced him as a talent ambassador in 2024, with his role centered on football and other major sporting events. James’ spokesperson now says that agreement has expired, clearing the way for the Polymarket relationship.

Polymarket operates differently from a conventional sportsbook. Users trade contracts tied to the probability of future events, ranging from sports and politics to entertainment and financial outcomes. The industry has grown rapidly, but prediction markets have also faced increasing regulatory scrutiny over whether certain products should be treated more like gambling and subject to state-level restrictions.

The company’s ownership and political connections have also drawn attention.

Donald Trump Jr. is an adviser to Polymarket and a partner at 1789 Capital. The investment firm recently committed approximately $300 million to a new Polymarket funding round that values the company at roughly $21 billion. That investment comes on top of an earlier stake of about $200 million, making 1789 Capital one of Polymarket’s largest investors.

James, meanwhile, hardly needs another endorsement for financial security. Forbes currently estimates his net worth at approximately $1.4 billion and credits him with more than $1 billion in pretax off-court earnings over the course of his career.

That makes the partnership less interesting for its monetary necessity than for what it represents.

James has spent much of his career moving beyond the traditional athlete-endorsement model, attaching himself to companies and industries where his name can create significant commercial value. Prediction markets are now becoming another major frontier in sports business, and Polymarket has landed arguably the most recognizable active basketball player in the world as its first athlete partner.

At the same time, the relationship raises questions that are unlikely to disappear.

When more than $40 million can be traded on a superstar’s personal career decision, and that same superstar later becomes a paid partner of the platform facilitating those trades, the arrangement inevitably creates a perception issue – even without evidence of wrongdoing.
