And it’s back. The anthem, the drama, the Bernabeu’s whistles —roll up, roll up, for another season of Champions League action.
Yes, it’s going to feel a little different this season without Pep Guardiola for the first time in 13 years. But there was still a sense of familiarity on the opening night of this season’s competition: two goals from Erling Haaland, one from Kylian Mbappe, and the sight of Jose Mourinho glowering on the touchline.
At least Mourinho could reflect on a happy outcome for Real Madrid, even if their 2-1 victory against Inter was far from convincing and accompanied by voluble disapproval from the home crowd, much of it aimed at Vinicius Junior.
Elsewhere, Enzo Maresca’s immaculate start as Manchester City stretched to a fourth successive win, beating Porto 2-0 with a couple of goals from, well, you know who (clue: he recently had a haircut).
And let’s not overlook Aston Villa reminding themselves about the art of goal-scoring.
Unai Emery’s team hadn’t scored a goal in their opening three Premier League fixtures. Remarkably, they had managed only one shot on target in that time. But those issues were not evident during a 3-2 win over Club Brugge in which Nicolas Jackson scored his first Villa goal since signing from Chelsea. John McGinn opened the scoring in Belgium, becoming Villa’s all-time leading scorer in European competitions (with 12 goals), and Emi Buendia was also on target for the Europa League winners.
There was also concerning news from Dortmund, as Konstantinos Karetsas was taken to hospitalafter experiencing “circulatory problems” during his side’s 3-2 win over Villarreal. A club statement said: “Kosta is doing well under the circumstances and is on his way to the hospital for further tests.”

Mbappe, Haaland: Scoring records, whistles and tussles
On the day the Ballon d‘Or shortlist was announced, the stars came to the party on night one.
First, there was the sight of Kylian Mbappe rattling in Madrid’s opening goal to move alongside Raul Gonzalez as the joint fifth all-time scorer in Champions League history.
It was Mbappe’s 71st goal in the competition, leaving him behind only Karim Benzema (90), Robert Lewandowski (109), Lionel Messi (129) and Cristiano Ronaldo (140). Mbappe collected his Golden Boot before the kickoff for finishing as the leading scorer in last season’s tournament. Nobody should bet against the Frenchman doing the same again.
But how long before Erling Haaland is challenging these numbers? Haaland scored both of Manchester City’s goals against Porto, taking his total to 59 in 59 Champions League appearances. The Norwegian has also drawn level with Sergio Aguero, on 36 goals, as City’s record scorer in the competition and, against those numbers, it didn’t seem to matter too greatly that his night ended with a yellow card for tussling with Porto midfielder Pablo Rosario (below).
On Thursday, it’s Bayern Munich’s first Champions League assignment against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt. The leading strikers from the World Cup have announced their presence. Over to you, Harry Kane.

Mixed night for The Other Mbappe
It wasn’t such a good night for Ethan Mbappe, younger brother of Kylian, who was sent off for an elbowing offence during Lille’s 3-2 home defeat against Real Betis.
The 19-year-old duly became the youngest Frenchman to receive a red card in the Champions League’s history. And the television replays did not look good for the younger Mbappe sibling.
What caused this moment of petulance? Mbappe had set up the opening goal for Lille, within two minutes of his big brother scoring Real Madrid’s first against Inter Milan.
But perhaps it had something to do with Lille twice surrendering a winning position. Troy Parrott had given Betis a 53rd-minute lead before Mbappe clashed with Natan, off the ball, three minutes later. The referee might have missed it, but the VAR camera feed was never going to be so lenient, and that left Lille playing with 10 men for over half an hour.
Who’d be a goalkeeper?
In happier times, Yann Sommer was a two-time Serie A winner for Inter Milan, playing a key role to help them reach the 2025 Champions League final.
Now 37, however, his erratic goalkeeping for Club Brugge made him an obliging opponent for a club with Aston Villa’s goal-scoring issues.
First, there was the very curious moment when Sommer, trying to launch a quick breakaway, ran through a congested penalty area and inadvertently carried the ball over the line
He got away with that one. Yet he wasn’t spared later in the first half when he ran just short of the centre-circle in a wildly misjudged attempt to get to the ball ahead of Nicolas Jackson.
Sommer’s attempt to clear the danger, 40 yards from his own goal, left him stranded as Jackson beat him to the ball. Jackson could hardly believe his luck and ran through to put the ball into an exposed net.
And yet, it was the current wearer of Inter’s gloves who committed possibly the worst goalkeeping error of the night.
Step forward Josep Martinez — once Sommer’s understudy at San Siro — and let’s analyse the rather excruciating moment that led to Federico Valverde scoring Madrid’s second goal.
Mbappe had already capitalised on some wretched defending to lash in the first goal, completely against the run of play, and move into the top five list of all-time Champions League scorers.
Yet the carelessness went up another notch, midway through the first half, when Benjamin Pavard rolled the ball into Martinez’s path and Valverde ran in to close the goalkeeper down.
Martinez’s first touch wasn’t terrible. But his second — trying to roll the ball under his foot to elude Valverde —was reckless, in the extreme, bearing in mind he was inside his own six-yard area.
Valverde was quickly on him and all it needed was one touch — not even a shot, more of a block —to divert the ball into the net. And that was 2-0.
Have we already seen the best Champions League free-kick goal this season?
You might not know too much about Razvan Marin, the 30-year-old AEK Athens midfielder who was making his first-ever appearance in the Champions League.
Yet the Romania international chose a spectacular way to introduce himself to Europe’s premier club competition. Memo to future opponents: this guy can take a free kick.
LASK, the Austrian champions, had five players lined up in their defensive wall when Marin started sizing up his angles. They also had another player lying on the ground, directly behind this barricade, just in case Marin tried to take everyone by surprise with an old-fashioned ‘daisycutter’ shot across the grass.
Yet Marin’s response makes it feel perfectly legitimate to wonder whether the Champions League, one night in, has already witnessed its best free-kick goal of the 2026-27 season.
Just look how far Marin aims the ball to the right – so wide of the wall that you could easily be mistaken for thinking his shot is going to fly harmlessly wide.
Seriously, it’s going wide, isn’t it? There is no way this is on target, right?
He’s fooled us all. It’s an extraordinary amount of curl that Marin has managed to put on the ball.
Lukas Jungwirth, the LASK goalkeeper, is in the right position. Nobody can say he reacts too slowly. But it’s futile. Marin’s diagonal shot dips at the last second and spears into the top corner of the net.
