The plan afterward is to pursue Hrgovic and place the WBC and IBF titles on the line. It sounds like an excellent fight, but mandatory defenses and promotional negotiations have plenty of time to interfere.
Elevated from interim champion after Oleksandr Usyk surrendered the WBC title in June, Kabayel previously defended the interim belt by stopping Damian Knyba in the third round in January. A November homecoming would be his first defense of the full title.
The German will be 34 by then. Hysa would be a sellable opponent because of the country’s large Albanian community, but his opposition has been well below the level Kabayel encountered against Arslanbek Makhmudov, Frank Sanchez, Zhilei Zhang and Knyba.
Discussing Hrgovic publicly before the November fight is confirmed creates an unnecessary distraction. Hysa may be unheralded, but champions sometimes produce poor performances when a homecoming is treated as a celebration, and the next opponent receives most of the attention.
After stopping Moses Itauma in the ninth round on August 29, Hrgovic is due to defend his IBF title against Frank Sanchez. The WBC may also identify a mandatory challenger for Kabayel after November.
Once both organizations begin issuing orders and deadlines, arranging a voluntary title fight becomes harder. A 2027 date then depends on both organizations granting exceptions instead of ordering separate mandatory defenses.
Sanchez provides a useful comparison between Kabayel and Hrgovic. The German broke down the Cuban with body punches before stopping him in seven rounds in 2024. Should Hrgovic labor to a decision or absorb heavy punishment against the same opponent, Kabayel will look like the stronger champion before negotiations begin.
The Croatian needs a decisive performance rather than another disputed result like his 2022 victory over Zhilei Zhang. Difficulty with Sanchez would not prevent the fight, but it would change how the matchup is viewed and likely influence the betting odds.
Against Itauma, Hrgovic demonstrated his durability by surviving a knockdown and a difficult opening before taking control as the younger heavyweight tired. That comeback showed toughness, but it also exposed his slow feet and discomfort when forced backward.
A different endurance test awaits against Kabayel. He applies controlled pressure, attacks the ribs and gradually increases his output instead of trying to finish every exchange with one punch. Hrgovic would be unlikely to receive the same late opening created when Itauma exhausted himself.
Working at mid-range behind a stiff jab and chopping right hand suits the Croatian. Kabayel must cross that distance without being caught on the way inside. Once he reaches the body, Hrgovic’s tall, upright stance may leave him uncomfortable fighting at close quarters.
The German market also offers commercial potential beyond a routine homecoming. Kabayel is the country’s first heavyweight champion since Max Schmeling, giving promoters an opportunity to rebuild a major heavyweight audience around him.
Successfully defending in November could strengthen the case for staging the Hrgovic fight in Germany or Croatia rather than sending another important heavyweight contest to Britain or Saudi Arabia. Their regional appeal is sufficient for a large European event if the promoters and broadcasters can reach terms.
Before any of that happens, Kabayel must handle his next challenger, and Hrgovic must defeat Sanchez. Their proposed meeting only survives if both still possess their titles when negotiations begin.
