Patrick Beverley likes the direction of the Miami Heat, but he believes their roster is still missing an important ingredient if they want to make a deep playoff run.
Beverley pointed directly to the point guard position, arguing that Miami needs another experienced ball-handler who can organize the offense and take pressure off Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“I like Miami. They need 1 or 2 more pieces imma be honest. They need a PG.”
His concern is less about Miami’s starting lineup and more about what happens when playoff games become tighter and possessions become increasingly dependent on star players. Beverley believes that without another dependable point guard, Antetokounmpo could be forced into taking on too much responsibility.
“If Miami doesn’t have a PG in the playoffs and they’re losing, the thing I’ve understood about superstars is if Giannis goes into ‘give me the ball mode’ he needs help.”
Beverley praised Antetokounmpo’s willingness to carry a team, but argued that Miami should be trying to reduce that burden rather than leaning into it.
“He will do everything he can to win every game, which is a good. But at this point in Giannis’ career he doesn’t need to do that right now. He does not need to score every point, every rebound, make every play, that’s too much.”
Beverley is not necessarily calling for Miami to replace Davion Mitchell. In fact, he said he is comfortable with Mitchell as the team’s starting point guard.
“I like Davion Mitchell as a starting PG but behind him they need a veteran PG.”

The message is ultimately about depth and control. Miami already has high-end talent, but Beverley believes another seasoned floor general could become especially valuable when the postseason slows down and Antetokounmpo needs someone else capable of initiating offense, managing possessions and keeping the team organized.
In Beverley’s view, the Heat are close. But if they want to maximize a roster built around Giannis, adding an experienced point guard may be one of the final moves needed to keep their superstar from having to do everything himself.
