Premier League 2 took a break last weekend, so the focus fell on the under-18s Premier League and the UEFA Youth League, where English academies go head-to-head with their European counterparts.
The spotlight shone on Manchester City and a centre-forward in superb form for the under-18s. However, there were more who caught the eye as City claimed an impressive 8-5 victory at Stoke City in the under-18 Premier League North.
The winners of the league face the champions of the south in a final to determine the overall champions.
Manchester City won the title three consecutive times between 2021 and 2024 but have lost in the final to Chelsea and Aston Villa in the last two seasons.
In the form they showed at Stoke, they could be difficult to stop once again this season.

The backstory
City have developed a reputation in recent years of hoovering up the best rising young talents from other academies and Lamb is certainly one of those as he joined from Leyton Orient in 2025.
He had impressed in the ranks at Orient and had even been involved around the first-team squad when he was just 15.
Like some of his City team-mates, Lamb signed scholarship forms when he arrived after City reportedly agreed to pay Orient £355,000 in compensation, and he certainly justified the investment in his first season.
He scored 28 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions, becoming the under-18s league’s top scorer in the process, and he started in City’s 2-1 FA Youth Cup triumph over rivals Manchester United.
His performances earned him a call-up to the England under-17s last season. He now has five caps and scored his first international goal against Estonia in March.
What we saw
With two goals and two assists, it would be hard for Lamb to be upstaged after an excellent first 45 minutes — although it wasn’t perfect.
For someone who has scored so many goals since joining City, the sight of him missing an open goal on 30 minutes after some fantastic work from the excellent Oliver Houlihan down City’s left flank was surprising. He tried to take the cross with his preferred left foot instead of his right, which looked awkward, but the keeper could also have made a touch on the cross to unsettle him.
He had found the net after just nine minutes when he collected a low ball from right winger Timeo Whisker, a 2024 signing from Cardiff City, turned and shot. It was blocked and he probably should have laid it off to Houlihan in space on the edge of the box, but he got a second bite of the cherry when the ball came back into the box and he showed great determination to force the ball home.

Lamb is a big, strong target man. He showed against Stoke his ability to hold off defenders and was a good conduit for City’s build-up play with Whisker and No 10 Dexter Oliver – a 2025 arrival from Tottenham Hotspur – linking with Lamb particularly well.
Oliver grabbed a hat-trick to take his tally for the season to seven in just four games after four against Leeds United the previous week.

The three combined for Oliver’s first, with Whisker’s break and pass inside and Oliver played a neat one-two with Lamb before scoring in the bottom corner.
Lamb liked to link play, although City also had plenty of joy down the flanks. When he did lay off to a team-mate, he was quick to turn and race towards the box. His only focus was to play centrally and he declined to be dragged wide or run channels. In some ways it was reminiscent of how Erling Haaland plays as the nine for the first team.
He demonstrated his physicality for Whisker’s second as he beat two Stoke defenders to a loose ball on the side of the box and swivelled to play the ball back for Whisker to finish.
He took a couple of painful knocks from behind but bounced back and showed his awareness inside the box again just before half-time to finish a low cross from close range.
He was substituted at half-time as City made a triple change, probably with their UEFA Youth League trip to Porto on Tuesday in mind.
It was a tougher test for City in Portugal and they lost 3-1, but it was Lamb who came off the bench and scored with a determined, sliding finish from just inside the penalty box in the second half that at least gave City a chance.
It has been a good start to life at City for Lamb. He will get chances in such a talented side and he is showing he can take them.
Only the exceptional make the way from the academy at City to the first team, but as his game grows, his time in the youth ranks will give him a platform to have a good professional career if he continues his own development.
