Mikel Arteta has revealed some of the ways he tries to embrace the challenge of unpredictable pre-match routines after Arsenal’s delayed flight to face Napoli in the Champions League this week.

Arsenal were due to fly to Naples in the early evening of Tuesday, September 8, but Air Traffic Control issues in the UK resulted in significant delays, which saw them arrive in Italy late that night.

Arsenal stayed at their training ground while waiting for the green light to fly from Luton, and had trained earlier in the day, but the delay led to mandatory pre-match media activities (scheduled for 7.30pm local time) being cancelled.

Asked about the situation before their 1-0 win, Arteta said in his press conference on Friday: “I love those challenges and I try to create them in pre-season, so when they happen, we’ve already experienced them.”

Pushed for examples of how he creates those challenges, he added: “Get to the stadium very late, change the routine. Delay the meals, delay the transport, take different routes. We’ve done many things. Make the dressing rooms hotter, more difficult, less (massage) beds.”

Arteta has grown a reputation for creative ways to keep his players on their toes. One such ruse, revealed by The Athletic in August 2024, involved a team of pickpockets being hired to teach his squad the importance of being ready, alert and prepared at all times.

That was a valuable lesson as the previous season, silly errors and lapses in concentration led to the side conceding goals that hamstrung their title ambitions.

Is Kai Havertz the best player in the Premier League so far this season?

“We’re going to have to adapt to different contexts,” Arteta said. “We try to anticipate it and create the best possible conditions but I think it’s important when there is not that element of surprise.

“It can happen, you can miss a flight, a train can be late, there can be traffic and I don’t want the players or staff panicking. When that happens, adapt to it. ‘Okay, we have another two or three hours on a plane, how can we use them?’ Play together, spend time together, sleep, but certainly don’t complain and use it as an excuse.”

This week was not the first time Arsenal have experienced severe delays before a European away game. In September 2023, when they were due to play Lens in France, storms in England kept Arsenal in Luton for hours before they could travel the night before the game. They lost the match 2-1.

Arteta and Arsenal had no need for excuses this time around, though, with Martin Odegaard scoring a late winner after a convincing team performance at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Ben White walked off gingerly late in the game, but ahead of Sunderland away on Saturday, September 12, Arteta said: “He’s fine.”

White, 28, has started all five of Arsenal’s competitive matches this season, completing the full 90 minutes in four of them. His strong form has been particularly important given Jurrien Timber’s absence at the start of the season but the Netherlands international is now close to a return to action, having been out with an ongoing groin issue since March.

“Let’s see (regarding Timber),” Arteta added. “He had another training session and he’s been training with us for a few days and looks in good shape.”
