The Brampton Steelheads and Sudbury Wolves completed a historic trade for top OHL prospect Tanner Adams — one that netted Brampton a record 17 draft picks.
Brampton selected Adams, the top-ranked player in his class on the league’s consensus top 100 ranking ahead of the June 12 draft in Kingston, with the No. 3 pick in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection. Three months later, he’s headed to Sudbury in a deal unlike any before it in OHL history.
“We would’ve really liked to have Tanner with us in Brampton, but as time went by, it seemed less and less likely,” Steelheads general manager James Richmond said. “So, I think we did right by the player and our hockey club. Now we move forward and try to use some of those assets and build through a trade or two.”

So, how did we get here? And is 17 picks as absurd as it sounds? Here’s a look at the trade that had social media buzzing Friday:
How did Brampton end up with 17 picks?
The Wolves actually only sent 15 picks to the Steelheads for the rights to Adams. The other two picks came from the OHL.
Whenever a lottery pick (a top-four selection in the OHL draft) does not report to his OHL team, that team is awarded the No. 5 pick in the following year’s draft. By trading Adams’ rights in advance of the league’s Sept. 15 deadline, the Steelheads will also receive the last pick of the second round in 2027, which currently slots as the No. 43 selection.
Adams, a 6-foot-1, 203-pound centre, registered 88 points in 52 games for The Hill Academy’s U16 AAA team last year and registered six goals in four games at the year-end OHL Cup.
A native of Porcupine, Ont., and minor hockey product of the Timmins Majors, Adams’ preferred destination was the Wolves, which was widely known before the draft, multiple league sources said on condition of anonymity so they could reveal private discussions. Just 3 1/2 hours south of Porcupine, Sudbury is the closest franchise to Adams’ northern Ontario hometown, which was appealing after two years away at Hill Academy (seven hours south of home).
By selecting the 16-year-old at No. 3, the Steelheads got out ahead of the Wolves, who held the fifth pick in the draft and used it to select center Kash Kwajah. After the trade, the Wolves can now build around the 2010-born pair of Adams and Kwajah.
“We are thrilled to bring Tanner to Sudbury. He is a leader and an elite person,” Wolves general manager Rob Papineau said in a statement. “His passion to be in Sudbury and be a Sudbury Wolf is everything to him. To add him to our team after being able to draft Kash makes this the best draft we have had in the past 10 years. Our staff felt they were the best two players available in the draft, so it is amazing to have them both on our team.”
How common are pick-heavy trades like this?
For years, massive multi-pick trades have been the norm in major junior hockey in Canada. And those transactions have only grown since the league decided to ban teams from trading first-round selections.
Just last year, the London Knights traded captain Sam O’Reilly and defenseman Jared Woolley, two pro-bound rentals, to the Kitchener Rangers for two young players and 11 draft picks. The Rangers went on to win the Memorial Cup, with O’Reilly winning tournament MVP.
When No. 4 pick Sam Dickinson didn’t report to Niagara after the 2022 OHL Priority Selection, the London Knights acquired the then-16-year-old for seven draft picks. Dickinson was later taken with the No. 11 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks.
The Steelheads, of course, got twice as many picks for Adams.
How risky is this trade for Sudbury?
This trade doesn’t come without some risk for the Wolves. As the league moves to building around younger players before their NCAA eligibility kicks in, it also runs the risk of losing them after one or two seasons. In the past, top players commonly played four full junior campaigns. Now, that’s no longer promised.
The Windsor Spitfires just lost Ethan Belchetz, the No. 1 pick in the 2024 OHL draft, to Michigan State a year or two earlier than they were expecting when they picked him.
If Adams and Kwajah stay in junior hockey beyond their eligibility for the 2028 NHL Draft, the trade will likely be a coup and position them to chase a championship. If one or both go the college hockey route, the trade could prove costly in the medium and long term.
Adams had not participated in any team activities with the Steelheads, who are four games into their OHL preseason schedule. He is expected to make his OHL debut with the Wolves a week from now when they open their regular season against the Soo Greyhounds on Sept. 18.
