Opetaia (31-0, 24 KOs) did not blast through him from the start. The Australian was busier and won rounds with his southpaw jab, footwork and punch volume, but the first half looked more methodical than destructive. Mikaelian stayed within reach by conserving energy and waiting for counterpunching opportunities.
That patience finally paid off in the seventh when a right hand shook Opetaia. It was the challenger’s best punch and the first moment that forced the champion to abandon his comfortable rhythm. Mikaelian needed to attack while Opetaia was vulnerable, but he let the opportunity pass.
Two rounds later, the fight went in the opposite direction. Opetaia hurt Mikaelian with a hard combination and continued throwing as the challenger grabbed one of his arms. With Opetaia striking him with the free hand, referee Harvey Dock jumped in and ended it.
Mikaelian did not argue. He looked spent, hurt and unable to protect himself, making the stoppage far easier to defend than the paperwork surrounding the bout.
There is something admirable about Mikaelian taking Opetaia instead of guarding the WBC title against Benavidez, a former super middleweight. Fighters are routinely criticized for choosing business over danger. Mikaelian chose danger, and boxing punished him for the honesty.
Opetaia remains the best cruiserweight in the world, but this was not a flawless performance. Mikaelian showed that a timed right hand can get through, and a more aggressive finisher may not allow him the recovery time he received in the seventh.
The ninth-round finish supplied the ending Opetaia needed after eight competitive rounds. Now he needs the major sanctioning body belts. The Ring championship carries history, but another Zuffa defense will not answer the undisputed question hanging over his reign.
