Frank Lampard conceded it was a “difficult scoreline” to contend with after his Coventry side were hammered 5-0 by Brighton this afternoon.
The Sky Blues competed well for the opening half-hour but fell apart after Brighton scored through Charalampos Kostoulas and Malick Yalcouye either side of the break.
Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off for an awful elbow in the face of Maxim De Cuyper and the 10-man hosts had no answers as Brighton scored again through a Pascal Gross penalty and long-range strikes from Lewis Dunk and Yasin Ayari.
Lampard told BBC Match of the Day: “It’s a difficult scoreline and it’s not easy at home. The first half was pretty good, we created some chances, better chances and we had them under a lot of pressure. Then a mistake to make it 2-0 and the red card makes it very difficult.
“We have to take responsibility. We did some good stuff, then the game became very, very difficult for us. We have to keep working. At [Manchester] City last week we created a few big chances and [Gianluigi] Donnarumma made some good saves. The pressure of the Premier League for these players is new. We have to continue to work and hopefully when we start scoring, and this team scored a lot of goals last season, but we have to keep working.
“I can’t complain with the players at the end.”
Hurzeler playing it cool after superb Brighton move fourth
The win moved Brighton up to fourth in the Premier League table but boss Fabian Hurzeler was not getting carried away.
He said: “It’s important to stay humble and not take these things for granted. Overall we are a team where a lot of players can score goals and that brings us a lot of flexibility which is good for a coach as well.”
Dunk’s was the goal of the game, the former England centre-half smashing a stunning 25-yard effort into the top corner.
“I’ve got that sort of shot in my locker and I just had a shot and it went in the top corner. I shocked myself but it was lovely,” he said on Sky Sports.
“We’ve shown fluidity and we have some real quality high up the pitch. If we keep scoring goals like that and keeping clean sheets, we’ll have a great season.”
