Patrick Beverley’s first NBA experience came in one of the most unusual environments imaginable: trying to make the Miami Heat while sharing a locker room with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Udonis Haslem.
Looking back on that period, Beverley said the experience extended far beyond basketball. As a young player trying to establish himself, he found himself spending time around some of the biggest stars in the league and absorbing how they operated away from the court.
“I’m with them off the court too,” Beverley recalled, explaining that James even showed him commercials and helped him navigate the business side of being an NBA player.
Beverley also said James played a role in his first Nike arrangement. He had signed a shoe deal with the company, but because he wore LeBron’s signature shoes, he credited James with helping open that door.
“I signed my first shoe deal with Nike but I only wear LeBrons… so he signed me to my first Nike deal.”
For Beverley, who was still fighting for his place in the league, the entire experience felt surreal.
“I say, ‘DAMN this sh*t lit.’”
One of his favorite memories came during training camp, when the Heat were staying at an Army base. Players received cash per diem, and Beverley said the veterans around him simply handed theirs over.
“I come on the bus — Udonis Haslem, Chris Bosh, D-Wade, LeBron James all threw me their per diem.”
For a rookie without an established NBA salary, suddenly receiving that money from four of the most prominent players on the roster was memorable enough. Beverley joked that it immediately changed the way he viewed his role around the team.
“I got all this bread…I’m an elite rookie, anything y’all need call my phone.”

The story offers a different look at the star-heavy Miami teams of that era. From the outside, the focus was almost entirely on championships, pressure and the enormous expectations surrounding James, Wade and Bosh. Beverley remembers something more personal: veteran stars making a young player feel included.
His stint in Miami did not ultimately turn into a regular-season role with the Heat, but the experience clearly stayed with him. Before Beverley built a long NBA career around toughness, defense and an unmistakable personality, he was a young guard watching some of the league’s biggest names up close, and, for a brief moment, enjoying the perks that came with being their rookie.
