Tom Aspinall has vacated UFC’s heavyweight title due to “ongoing complications” from an eye injury.
Aspinall, 33, has been out of action since he first put his belt on the line against Ciryl Gane in October 2025, which ended in a ‘no contest’ after Aspinall was poked in the eye.
The Manchester-based fighter abandons the title having not completed a single fight since inheriting it from the retired Jon Jones, and said on Monday he made the decision in order to not “hold the heavyweight division up”.
“I’m absolutely gutted,” Aspinall said on social media. “I’ve chased this dream since I was 10 years old.
“Ongoing complications with my eyes mean I cannot get medically cleared to fight right now. I’ve had multiple surgeries, accidents and infections, and done everything possible to get back to competing.”
Aspinall revealed last year he had been diagnosed with Brown’s syndrome in both eyes. The rare condition restricts the movement of the eye, and usually only affects one eye — according to the NHS.
Gane called out Aspinall for a rematch in Paris after beating Alex Pereira with a second-round stoppage to take the interim heavyweight strap at the White House in June. On his YouTube channel, Aspinall reacted to his rival’s comments: “I’ll go to Paris. Let me know. I’ll be there.”
But Aspinall, who returned to training in June, said he suffered another setback with his injury.
“I had previously agreed to a fight date and was back sparring, feeling great and ready to compete when an accident caused further damage to my right eye,” he said on Monday. “This means more time away from the sport, and right now, the timing of my return is unclear.”
Aspinall, though, quashed speculation that he was planning to leave the UFC.
“Stepping away from the title is not stepping away from the sport or the dream,” he said. “I’ll continue doing everything I can to get healthy, get cleared and get back to competing as soon as possible.”
