The LA Clippers and the Toronto Raptors have officially completed the blockbuster trade both two teams agreed to at the end of June, sending Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto and Brandon Ingram to LA, league and team sources toldThe Athletic.
The sources were granted anonymity because the official trade call had not been completed.
The Raptors will also send the Clippers 2023 lottery pick shooting guard Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and second-round picks in 2030 and 2033. The trade was expected to be completed in early July, but the two teams agreed to pause the proceedings while the NBA concluded its investigation into allegations of salary-cap circumvention by the Clippers.
On Sept. 2, the NBA announced the findings and penalties from its investigation of the Clippers and Leonard. The penalties for Leonard did not result in voiding his contract or any suspension; Leonard will be required to pay the league $700,000 in connection with his violations. The Clippers were found by the league to have broken salary-cap circumvention rules contained in the league’s collective bargaining agreement, and Leonard was said to have violated the circumvention rules “through the conduct of” his uncle Dennis Robertson, who served as Leonard’s business manager.

As a result of the misconduct, the Clippers were fined $30 million, will forfeit five first-round picks (one each from 2029 through 2033), and will enter the season without chairman Steve Ballmer (suspended for one year), business president Gillian Zucker (suspended for one year), and basketball president Lawrence Frank (suspended for six months, which lasts from final cuts of training camp through the February 2027 trade deadline), among other penalties. Robertson was also banned for five years from conducting business with NBA teams on behalf of any player, league or team personnel. With Ballmer, Frank and Zucker suspended, the trade was delayed as the Clippers sorted out their front office, according to multiple league sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the deal publicly.
Leonard is expected to sign an extension with Toronto. This season will be the final year of a three-year, $149 million contract signed in January 2024. This trade reunites Leonard with the franchise he helped to a championship in 2019, marking the second of Leonard’s two NBA Finals MVP awards.
The 2025-26 campaign was arguably Leonard’s finest offensive season. He earned his seventh All-Star selection and seventh All-NBA honor, making the All-NBA Second Team. Leonard averaged a career-high 27.9 points while shooting 50.5 percent from the field and making a career-best 2.6 3-pointers per contest. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year also averaged 1.9 steals, his highest mark in eight seasons.
Ingram is coming off his second All-Star appearance, averaging 21.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists for a Raptors team that lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs. The Raptors traded for the 28-year-old in February 2025. Dick has played in 190 games since Toronto drafted him 13th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, but saw his playing time and points per game cut by more than half last season.
Leonard’s departure ends a seven-year tenure that extended the Clippers’ run of winning seasons and bridged the franchise into the era of its new arena in Inglewood, Calif. Ultimately, however, the partnership was defined as much by injuries and playoff absences as it was by regular-season success.
To pair Leonard with Oklahoma City Thunder star Paul George, the Clippers executed one of the most consequential trades in franchise history, sending 2018 lottery pick Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Danilo Gallinari and control of seven first-round picks to Oklahoma City. The expectation was clear: The Clippers would immediately contend for championships throughout the primes of two Southern California natives, with Leonard from Moreno Valley and George from Palmdale.
Seven years later, the 35-year-old Leonard was the last remaining player from the 2019-20 roster. The Clippers won just three playoff series during his time with the franchise. Their lone trip to the Western Conference finals came in 2021, when they fell to the Phoenix Suns while Leonard was sidelined with a torn right ACL that cost him the entire 2021-22 season.
Now, the Clippers have to carry on with a roster led by Ingram, two-time All-Star point guard Darius Garland, and rookie Keaton Wagler. While head coach Tyronn Lue is in place, the Clippers’ front office will be led by general manager Trent Redden and senior vice president Mark Hughes, who will have only the first-round picks from Toronto to work with going forward. The Clippers’ first-round picks in 2027 and 2028 are involved in swaps.
Toronto had a relatively quiet offseason, adding former Leonard teammate power forward Kyle Anderson on a guaranteed contract while drafting Santa Clara power forward Allen Graves in the first round of the June draft. Now, with Leonard, the Raptors remain in the mix of teams in arguably the most compelling Eastern Conference of the decade.
The Clippers will be without rest both times they are set to face the Raptors this upcoming season. Leonard is set to return to Intuit Dome on Nov. 2, one night after the Raptors visit the Los Angeles Lakers and after the Clippers visit the Golden State Warriors. The Clippers will also visit Toronto on New Year’s Day, one night after visiting James Harden and the Cavaliers. The Clippers and Raptors also are set to meet on Oct. 10 for a preseason game in Vancouver.
