Michelle Yeoh says viewers may not need to watch the earlier Blade Runner movies before starting the new series. She feels Blade Runner 2099 introduces its story in a way that new audiences can follow.
The Prime Video limited series expands the world established by Ridley Scott and Denis Villeneuve. However, its central story follows two new characters facing their own uncertain futures. The show is also designed as a standalone story within the larger Blade Runner universe.
While talking about the series with Collider’s Steve Weintraub, the 64-year-old actress said, “I think the most interesting thing I’ve heard so far is that even if you’ve not watched the first two movies, because in this new generation, the younger audience might not have watched the first one, you would understand because of the way the story evolves. And I think the complication between the two characters, between Hunter (Schafer) and myself, it’s… Say no more (Laughs).”
What is Michelle Yeoh’s new Blade Runner 2099 TV show about?
Blade Runner 2099 takes place 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049. The story follows Cora, a fugitive who takes on one final identity as a Blade Runner. She teams up with Olwen, a Replicant whose life is nearing its end, to track down someone hiding a dangerous secret.
Michelle Yeoh plays Olwen, while Hunter Schafer portrays Cora. The cast also includes Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Matthew Needham, and Johnny Harris. Katellyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Tom Burke, and Maurizio Lombardi have recurring roles.
Silka Luisa serves as creator and showrunner. Jonathan van Tulleken directs the first two episodes and executive produces the series. Ridley Scott also serves as an executive producer, while Alcon Entertainment produces the show.
The series is set to premiere exclusively on Prime Video on November 25, 2026. All eight episodes will be available across more than 240 countries. Blade Runner 2099 will therefore expand the franchise through a new story, cast, and setting.
