Their first meeting one year earlier had ended in a controversial split draw. Adalaide Byrd’s 118-110 score for Canelo overshadowed much of the action and left Golovkin believing he had been denied a clear victory.

The rematch was originally scheduled for May 5, 2018, but Canelo tested positive twice for clenbuterol. He blamed contaminated Mexican beef and received a six-month suspension from the Nevada Athletic Commission. Golovkin and trainer Abel Sanchez rejected the explanation, creating genuine hostility between the camps.

Canelo Takes Away “Mexican Style”

Sanchez made “Mexican style” his central demand during the promotion. He criticized Canelo for fighting near the ropes in their first meeting and challenged him to hold his ground.

Canelo gave Sanchez exactly what he requested, but it worked against Golovkin.

Rather than conceding territory and waiting to counter, Canelo pressed forward and claimed the center of the ring. Golovkin spent significant portions of the fight moving backward, a reversal from the pressure fighting that had carried him through his middleweight title reign.

Canelo’s positional change also limited Golovkin’s ability to cut off the ring. With no opponent circling away from him, Golovkin became a reactive boxer who relied heavily on his jab and right hand.

The lack of body punching made his approach even more predictable. CompuBox credited Golovkin with only six body connects across 36 minutes. Canelo landed 46.

Golovkin’s head-focused attack allowed Canelo to concentrate on slipping the jab and firing combinations without worrying about being punished downstairs. Canelo invested in Golovkin’s ribs while Golovkin continued hunting for openings above the shoulders.

Golovkin still controlled long stretches with his jab. CompuBox credited him with landing 234 of 879 punches, compared with Canelo’s 202 of 622. Golovkin landed more punches in eight rounds and held a 118-59 advantage in jabs.

Canelo’s work was more concentrated. He connected with 143 power shots to Golovkin’s 116 and landed at a higher percentage.

That contrast divided viewers. Those favoring Golovkin valued his activity, jab output, and stronger work during rounds nine through eleven, when Canelo began to tire. Those favoring Alvarez valued the heavier punches, body attack, and his willingness to control the pocket.

Several media scorecards leaned toward Golovkin or a draw. The official judges rewarded Canelo’s power and aggression.

The 12th was the decisive round. Moretti and Weisfeld both awarded it to Canelo, allowing him to win 115-113 on their cards. Had either judge given that final three-minute session to Golovkin, the fight would have ended in a second consecutive draw.

Golovkin would have retained his titles and preserved his perfect professional record. Instead, he suffered his first loss and saw his long championship reign end by the narrowest possible margin.

Canelo used the victory as the launching point for the most successful period of his career. He moved to super middleweight three months later and stopped Rocky Fielding before returning to 160 to defeat Daniel Jacobs. He eventually became the dominant champion at 168 pounds.

Golovkin later regained the IBF middleweight title against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, but the second Canelo fight was his final performance at the absolute height of his abilities. Those 24 rounds against a younger Alvarez demanded an enormous physical price.

A third fight arrived in September 2022, with Canelo winning a clearer unanimous decision at 168 pounds. Golovkin was 40 by then and lacked the speed and sustained offense that had made the first two bouts so difficult to score.

Their rematch remains the rivalry’s defining fight: 12 punishing rounds, no knockdowns, two competing scoring philosophies, and a final round that changed both careers.
